This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I liked Dubai when I was there. Nice place to enjoy liberty call.
"Meh."

Dubai is one of the two major hubs (along with Tel Aviv) of prostitution in the Middle East.  The City of the Future is a hotbed for the world's oldest profession.

Its like they had all that flat desert land, lots of money available, never had tinkertoys or erector sets as kids and said:
"Hey lets go crazy fun/wild and build lots of shit thats really tall!!!"

This is what happens when oil hits $125 a barrel. Crasy, tasteless, insane spending by people who, societally, are still living in tents.

To be fair, this sort of crazy shit was going on well before oil hit even $100 a barrel.  And the "still living in tents" bit is a little imperialistic, don't you think?  I mean, aside from being crass and inaccurate.

..Okay.....before we get political with this silliness....

I just think its kind of fun but also a little "What the FucK??!!?" that they are building like that. The fact that they are trying to attract westerners there means that at least Dubai is "OKay!" with westerners in general.

Its still weird to see that kind of exaggerrated sci-fi looking city being built during my lifetime. I always kind of thought I'd be in my 70s by the time I'd see that for real in the world. Of course, when I was a kid (5-10 yrs old) I thought I might see these kinds of cities happen just as I was entering college age.

If they want to spend their money on that stuff -  then thats cool.

And let's not forget there is a ton of western money in Dubai.

Societally, the middle eastern nations are still living in tents, especially the oil-rich Gulf nations. They are two generations removed from being camel-herds, not matter what your more enlightened Western sensibilities think or feel. They still stone people to death, for fuck's sake, and won't even allow women to drive, much less show some ankle in many of these "nations" -  don't give me that imperialist bullshit.

That said, yes, its interesting lookin stuff. I especially like the indoor ski-slopes (not sure that is in this particular slideshow of wretched excess or not, but I'm sure we've seen it before).

The money in Dubai is not primarily oil money. That was their foundation, but they used that to build up an entire trade/manufacturing/tourist economy that now is far larger then the oil money.

...Oh and it is totally a coincidence that the same website has caused some sort of problem on the tbp.

I do things like plug in "Future cities" or "tall buildings" in my search engines. (I got more than three)
Kind of how I stumbled across this stuff.

How did it get so controversial over on the tbp??

My love of really tall buildings is probably a leftover residue from reading Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead when I was a teenager.

The people with the money who are having all these wonders built are far more sophisticated and urbane than you give them credit for being, regardless of where their cousins live.

And you're, what, two, maybe three generations removed from being a dirt-farmer?

Aw, now you're getting personal.  Please, fuck yourself.  And I mean that in the most polite and helpful manner possible.

The nation of Dubai has had the foresight to realise two things:
  • The flow of oil will eventually slow and end some day;
  • Their oil fields aren't that great to begin with.
So, yeah, they invested in the infrastructure to insure that they would be a fabulous luxury destination to the world's richest for decades to come.  The only kink in the plan might be if it becomes too expensive to travel there (though the very, very rich seem to figure out ways to work around that sort of thing).
