Netflix's Dracula is surprisingly well written so far (I'm 2/3rds of the way through). It's a little converged, though. They envaginated Van Helsing, but at least turned her into a pretty badass nun.

I forced myself to finish the first piece. I have no interest in going back for the other two.

Well, fill me in...what was hard to take about episode 1?

Stumbling into episode 3, I have to concede things drop off sharply from the very good episode 1. Oh well, at least the SJW bingo card wasn't completely filled (well, 35 minutes to go in the last episode if I can take it).

Loved Episode 1.
Great story adaption. LOVED this version of Dracula. I thought the modernization of the Dracula character and his bleak humor was well thought out.
The actor they chose for Dracula was a great choice and he portrayed the character well.
Episode 1 was SUPER creepy and disturbing.

Unfortunately, Episode 2 went downhill very fast.
I didn't like how they changed Van Helsing from a male Doctor to a Nun.
I DID like the actress though. She is clearly a great actress and worked well with what she was given.
I didn't like how she basically wasn't at all afraid of Dracula. Van Helsing, stood up to Dracula in the past, but was still scared of him.
I would have preferred a story change of the original Van Helsing being killed off by Dracula and perhaps this Nun is a daughter or relative of some sort and picks up the torch to fight Dracula, being her own character, rather than a gender swap.
I actually quite liked the Nun character overall UNTIL she was revealed as Van Helsing.

I got about halfway through episode 2 and gave up in the end.  WAY too much Social politics commentary rammed down my throat.

Such a shame, this mini-series had such GREAT potential.

Agreed, envaginating Van Helsing was just so unnecessary. It's not like they were following the story line by line, they clearly were willing to other, great liberties with it (as per episode 1). She's a great character as-is, let her be that great character without robbing the name.

By episode 3, the convergence is overmuch. They take the story to modern times (Renfield finally shows up as a lawyer), except now Harker is engaged to a...well, I bet you can guess it. And, of course, Drac has to be interested in her (because we all know that's how 15th century nobles rolled). I give props to the ending for being original...but was still weaaaaaak.

Major props to the actress who played Van Helsing, she was very good, it's not her fault.

Considering that I didn't care for the first episode, that tells me I did the right thing by stopping while I was...um, not as far behind.

Yeah she was a great character. There were a few funny moments in the first episode that made me lol in real life.
The bit about fantasizing about other people and she looks at Harker's wife (the one in disguise as a nun)  haha!
That and her generally quirky behavior was pretty cool which fits in well with the Van Helsing character.
A shame they blew it and just stole/replaced the original Van Helsing.  A real missed opportunity.

Mmm ok, glad I dropped out after halfway through episode 2. I had a feeling it wasn't going to end well.

Yes I expect that was the reasoning behind it. It took some of the believability of the character away from her.

You know. I'd love to say this is no different from the two TV pilots and one cartoon featuring a frozen and awakened in modern times Holmes. Who teams up with a female Watson or equivalent. Usually Watson's daughter or grand-daughter. Except in this day and age of agenda wars. We know why it was done, especially when it starts to get a little, or a-lot, heavy handed. Its like no one can just let a lead female character be... god forbid... female anymore.

That, and like in the 90s when there was a spate of this. A little is nice. Every-Damn-Movie is not.

i was happy with it until dracula went into modern times then it it lost me.
