This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Dr Who? WHO? WHAT? MASSIVE SPOILER!

Just had a thought. Missy once said that she and the Doctor had a child together. This could be a lie, but what if the female Doctor got pregnant?
"Meh."

Quote from: gufnork;975996Ultimately I suppose I just don't see the justification for this change, at least not from within the who universe itself. From outside looking in, now that's a little easier to understand i think given the current fad for embracing 'diversity'. The only thing that's missing now is a Muslim companion throwing down a prayer mat and going hell for leather with daily prayers in the TARDIS console room 5 times each episode.

I may like her in the end but I'm really struggling with the idea of changing him into her just because we can.

The notion of an exclusionary and hostile RPG community is a fever dream of zealots who view all social dynamics through a narrow keyhole of structural oppression.

Maybe, but it's not like the Doctor needed a partner to be a partner before.  I'm equally sure two male Time Lords could make a baby if they (and the writer of the week) wanted.

It's been said Doctor Who reflects English "nerd culture" of its time.  Which is why I always wanted an African American (not black Brit) to be the first female Doctor: to reflect the impact of American sci-fi and racial issues on Doctor Who.  ;)

And of course there are the rumours of leaked scripts for the christmas episode. I posted about it on the Gallifrey base forum but it was pretty much dismissed out of hand. May well be nonesense, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if something like that happens. I was going to post the gist of it here but can't for the life of me find a spoiler tag. But as I say, it may have been nonsense anyway.

Quote from: jeff37923;975997If the first female Doctor Who isn't Helen Mirren or Jenny Agutter, then who cares?

Are they the only approved actresses for the role?

What a strange point of view. What makes them better, because Helen Mirren happens to be a media darling?

Quote from: HorusArisen;976007For better or worse my Doctor is a white male Brit, anything else is just someone playing at being the doctor.

Except it is.

Is-ought fallacy, hard at work.

Your not really making a point since your attempting to counter an opinion not a stated fact.

To me having grown up with 13 (inc War doctor) male British actors representing the doctor on TV this is what I expect and want to see. She's a fine actress and had they made a Romana spin off with her I'd be all in, but she's not the Doctor to me.

YMMV and probably does.
Talk gaming or talk to someone else.

Do you happen to remember which episode this came up in?

Something tells me if Moffat was still at the helm, we might get that storyline. I guess with Chibnall it depends on whether he is going more in the direction of Torchwood or more in the direction of Broadchurch. I am guessing something like this is unlikely to occur. I think the Doctor is well passed the point of having more children.

The point is simply that there is no valid reason why the Doctor shouldn't be female.

That's why i said it was fallacious.

Now, you can certainly say it's your preference that the doctor be male, but that opens a discussion as to why you might think that and i would assert something very unpopular around here but that's ever so slightly off topic.

I get that up to this point all the actors have been male. But how about at the very least give the girl a chance - unlike some of the manbabies crying on the intertwitter. :D

It doesn't sound right to me, and I'm a mad whovian. But it could have been a moffat tidbit. Wouldn't surprise me. Besides we know the doctor has a grandaughter at least (and a daughter, of sorts, in the form of Jenny).

Guys, I'd like for us to have a real discussion about Doctor Who. Not stepping in here as a mod. But there is enough name-calling about the new Doctor just about everywhere online. Again, not modding, but this subforum could use good threads. So if you want to disagree fine. Maybe try to have more constructive discussions though around the topic instead of ending conversations with insults. I think we can still all make these points without that. People are going to disagree over this.

Most of the crying I've seen has come from women who like their Doctor male and white. Though I think both of us would be guilty of assuming genders... Very heteronormative of us.

I can't recall which episode offhand, it was slipped in to a conversation Missy was having with the Impossible Girl companion early in the season IIRC.

Because who the fuck is Jodie Whittaker? Never heard of her.

Remember when I told you to look up the word gravitas? This relates to that word.

I'm starting to think that this site should start charging you for the education we are giving you.
