Title: Big Purple fell down and went "boom" ...again..
Post by: Koltar on March 29, 2007, 09:58:50 PM
So I'm surfing various forums and decide to check out the "Big Purple & Pink"  and I see this :

QuoteSomething went wrong with our machine today, forcing a reboot. The machine is back, but now CHECKing out post table. We'll see you in several hours.

In the meantime, this is a great time to read our new columns on a new d20 campaign, reviewing or miniatures.

Alternatively, stop by the Gaming Index and rate a few games or enter some magazines that we don't have yet.

--4.30PM, PT

Wonder what the reason is this time.

Lots of things can go wrong with computers.

Nothing personal with you, Koltar, but are we going to make a thread every time another forum is down? :raise:

They certainly seem to have hit the peak of their hardware's ability to cope with the traffic, don't they?

They wouldn't have a problem if they got rid of the god-awful tangency. Rudest people I've ever experienced.

I've been trying to avoid that section for the past few weeks.
Sad thing is - not much interesting is going on in there roleplaying section.

Well, there was quite a good thread started by some guy with a yellow sign as his avatar, called "What's the best homebrew you've encountered?" but... ah.

Personally I hope it's just a case of them pissing off a good hacker who's taking them down regularly.

Interestingly, not everybody around here's got a hate boner to polish. I mean, Nox has his forest of 'em, Pundit's got a good dozen or so irons in the fire, sure. I'm not saying they're a rarity around here. Hell, I've got a couple.

But on the other side of the coin, some of us happen to read and post at both sites. Knowing there is in fact an element who are interested in reading the Big Purple as well, some people might occasionally mention its periodic outages here. Sure, it brings some of the crazies out of the woodwork, but so does this shit...

"Narrativist play!" "Amber isn't a roleplaying game!" "Arabs!" "Andy Hackard!" "Socialism!"

C'mon, man. Don't grow a hate boner about dual citizenship, so to speak in a horribly overstretched metaphor. Go get your hate on about Shadowrun or something.

I'm with the Ape on this one.  I don't like tBP that much, but I do post there, and read threads on it.

As far as I can tell the OP was posting News, nothing more, nothing less.

And they have had quite a few crashes lately, so we are free to speculate as much as we want as too why. Just like if my neighbor's house burns down I'm free to stand on my front lawn with a cup of coffee in hand and go...

"them are some purdy flames. Wonder if he was storin' some naptha in the garage?"

I don't "Hate" the Big Purple and pInk ,  so much as I'm disappointed in that site and with them.  Thye letters/acronym RPG is in the title odf that site and forum - and they don't seem to care much about role playing games over there.

In my original post  - I was just posting the news at most.

the think that gets me (as others have said) is that it isn't an RPG focused site anymore.

there are about 3 mil posts in the RPG related forums and 3.5 mil posts in Tangency.

It's clear that they are more worried about keeping the total number of users up (no matter why they are there), so they can make more mony off of ads.

That and I have found only a few interesting threads over there in the last couple years.

yes, you are correct.

If you are an Exalted fan you'll have plenty to talk about over there.

I still think the sheer volume of the RPG section makes RPGnet one of the most RPG oriented sites out there...even if it has a higher traffic in Tangency.  Especially since a large proportion of those posters also read and/or post in the RPG sections.

Looking solely at the RPG-related traffic on a daily basis still puts RPGnet very near the top of all RPG oriented websites.

meh.  if i stop over there i just look at trouble tickets.  any time i look in the tabletop roleplaying forum i rarely find anything of worth to me.  i don't care for the vibe on tBP.  if i have a gaming question or want to discuss such matters, i do it here.

i'm also in that "nuke tangency from orbit. . ." camp.

It's down again as we speak.

You know, I can't help but wonder if it's graphics heavy threads like the Motivational Posters and Hawt Chick threads that are causing the problems.

That's a lot of information in some of those pictures.

And unless said pictures are being hosted by the site itself, it means fuckall for the site's bandwidth.

Attachments are limited to paid accoutns only and there really aren't that many of those.

the purple toilet needed to have more subforums, to reduce traffic on the main forums. For instance, rthey could have divided up the rpg discussions into catarogy, like fantasy, SF, modern, etc.

But no.

But no.

That's what killed Gaming Outpost, for those of you who remember that.  Too many subfora and the discussions kind of die off, you get a much more productive set of discussions by keeping the number of fora as few as possible.
