There's now a lot of really good superhero flicks to choose from (Superman, Batman, Batman Begins, Spiderman, Spiderman 2, Sin City) so what do you think is the Best Superhero flick thus far, and why?
For me, it's still Superman. I think it really caught the soul of the Superman comics, for starters. Reeve's performance was right on target. It played on a theme that's always been popular with Superman: Despite all his powers, even Superman felt helpless. It captured that theme perfectly. Second, the theme song is one of the all time classics of any movie, anywhere. It's instantly recognizable, and fits the film like a glove. Finally, it doesn't take itself too seriously. It was filmed in a time when comics weren't high art yet, and the film has a lot of levity.
"Otisburg, Otis? Otisburg?"
Unfortunately, they got way too carried away with it in the sequels, but for this one movie (and to a certain extent, Superman 2), they really made a perfect comic book movie.
I might take it on the chin for this one, but I am partial to Batman Begins.
I think it did a great job capturing the notion that, in the end, Batman is just another man and has all the physical and emotional foibles that anyone else has. Batman can get hurt and often does. Bruce Wayne often has difficulty discerning the line between justice and vigilantism.
I think the movie did a great job capturing the essence of what I (IMHO) think makes Batman a little different from other superheroes.
As always, YMMV.
I think the Spider-man flicks are right up there. I'm also partial to the Superman and Superman 2 and the first two X-men flicks are good, too (the second being better, IMO). Batman and Batman Begins are both really good...it's a hard call, but I'll stick with Spider-man. Everybody did a great job in nearly every aspect, "Great Power/Responsibility," Aunt May, spidey-costume, the whole she-bang...I'm not even offended by Might Morphin Power Goblin, personally.
Spiderman II by a big margin.
Both Spiderman flicks
Both X-men flicks
Superman II
Batman (the first one)
Those are my faves right there... :)
-O
See I am not one to read the comics but I do have to say that I thought Sin City was a great movie and I also did like Batman Begins.
I really liked the way that they shot Sin City. It made for a great visual feast as well as keeping with the original almost to a T. So it has many good things about it.
Batman Begins, the Hulk, both Spiderman movies, both X Men movies, Daredevil, Batman, and Superman. In that order.
I'm sure I'm forgetting some movies and I'll put 'em in the list as they're mentioned.
Yes, I did just put Hulk in the number 2 slot. No, that wasn't a typo. :p
Sin City isn't a superhero movie to me. Comic book, yes, but not superhero. If I were to include it, it would edge the Hulk out -- but I don't think it goes in this category.
I liked the Hulk, too. I wouldn't put it at the top of the pack (that's just me), but in the recent slew of flicks it definately was better than Daredevil and a few others and still light years ahead of the stuff they were doing in the 80's.
I can't believe I forgot the Incredibles and Sky High, though...both good (with the Incredibles being the better of the two but both behind the Spidey flicks, IMO).
Damn, can't believe I didn't think about The Incredibles either.
And yeah, Sin City isn't really a superhero flick. I goofed mentioning that to begin with.
Not sure what may favorite would be, but I'd lean toward Batman Begins. Spider-Man is up there, too.
Batman Begins, the Incredibles, the Hulk, both Spiderman movies, both X Men movies, Mystery Men, Daredevil, Batman, and Superman. In that order.
I, too, can't believe I forgot the Incredibles. :o Haven't seen Sky High so I don't have an opinion of it. I added Mystery Men -- I finally saw that a couple months back and it's goofy fun. :)
Quote from: CyberzombieBatman Begins, Unbreakable, the Incredibles, the Hulk, both Spiderman movies, both X Men movies, Mystery Men, Batman, and Superman. In that order.
Fixed it for me. :)
Dear lord, I'm not the only one who liked the Hulk.
I really liked Batman Begins. Spiderman I was so-so on, but I really liked Spiderman II. I wouldn't have thought of The Incredibles, but it belongs on this list. The X-Men movies I like or don't like according to my mood. :p
Unbreakable.
Quote from: the ultimate nullifierUnbreakable.
Shit! I always forget that one. And it's probably my favorite of them all.
Quote from: cranberryDear lord, I'm not the only one who liked the Hulk...
Must have been something in the water. I liked the Hulk, LOVED the action scenes like the tank/helicopter battle. And I really liked the comic book-like scene wipes.
Even though I have it on DVD and have since it came out I have yet to watch Batman Begins. As such my current opinion is Spiderman. I hear seeing Batman Begins could change that. I guess eventually I'll see. Now as to why I chose the original Spiderman it is simple the first time I saw him swing across the big screen was almost orgasmic.
I think my favorite is Batman Begins, though I think the original Batman is closer to the comics.
I also dug Sky High. It wasn't a great movie but I think it did an excellent job of capturing that Superhero feeling and was a great tribute to the 4 color comics of old in terms of the different super heroes and the scope of the story.
I always forget Mystery Men.
It had to grow on me, but I really like it, too.
I really liked Batman Begins and the Spider-Man movies. I think these are some of the best examples of superhero movies that we have today.
Quote from: KnightcrawlerI really liked Batman Begins and the Spider-Man movies. I think these are some of the best examples of superhero movies that we have today.
And Catwoman. Don't forget Catwoman...
Batman Begins.
If I liked Dunst better as Mary Jane, I'd list the Spidey movies, because other than her, they were spot on.
Another vote for Unbreakable, followed by the Incredibles.
Though Sky High did a better job than any of 'em at capturing late 60's early 70's DC.

She was a worlds better than Katie Holmes. She was the only unfortunate part of Batman Begins.

I'm with you dude. I'm still hoping the original report of her not being in the franchise after the original holds.
Quote from: Harry JoyWhile the new Batman and Spiderman flicks trump all that came before, I'm still a softie for "The Phantom", "The Shadow", and the early Zorro flicks.
Okay, The Phantom had almost nothing in common with the source material. I was a huge fan of the original serial cartoon. But the movie, even though I wanted to like it, was horrible.
The Shadow on the other hand I actually liked a lot.
And as to early Zorro flicks you would have to clarify which ones.
Quote from: KnightcrawlerI'm with you dude. I'm still hoping the original report of her not being in the franchise after the original holds.
No worries. No way Tom Cruise let's her do another Batman with the possibility of her mackin' on Christian Bale...
The Incredibles and Batman Begins are really the only two I'd consider great movies, but I'd add Spiderman 2 and Infra-Man to the list if it's superhero movies (as it appears to be)
I'd probably add the first X Men movie if it was more like the opening moments at the concentration camp and less like Wolverine: The Motion Picture.
Quote from: Insert Username HereNo worries. No way Tom Cruise let's her do another Batman with the possibility of her mackin' on Christian Bale...
Plus before she got knocked up she had gotten way to skinny. That and she'll probably be as batshit as Tom by the tim ethe second one starts filming.
Is it just me, or in every Batman movie to date does the romantic interest find out that Bruce Wayne is Batman?
Let's see, Vicki Vale in Batman: Check
Catwoman in Batman Returns: Check
Batman Forever? Hmmmm, maybe not - don't remember
Batman & Robin: Uh, I tried to wipe that film from my memory
Batman Begins: That chick from Dawson's Creek: Check
Quote from: Teflon BillyI'd probably add the first X Men movie if it was more like the opening moments at the concentration camp and less like Wolverine: The Motion Picture.
No that movie doesn't come out until next year, seriously. The balance was good to the characters. And less Wolverine would have meant a lesser movie :D

Yeah, he tells Nicole Kidman in Batman Forever who he is.
It was something that I was hoping wouldn't happen in Batman Begins. Honestly, why does Batman always have to have a female love interest? Holmes' character was so unnecessary and she was easily the weakest part of the movie.
Quote from: TiQuinnHonestly, why does Batman always have to have a female love interest?
Because everyone naturally assumes that he and Robin have a thing goin' on.

Yeah....ward my ass!
Batman Begins, Unbreakable, the Incredibles, the Hulk, both Spiderman movies, both X Men movies, Mystery Men, Daredevil, Batman, Dark Man, and Superman. In that order.
Man, me and Vermicious seem to have the same taste in movies. :o
I added Dark Man in addition to Unbreakable. It's good fun. :D
The Incredibles, Mystery Men, Unbreakable.
Dark City is superhero-ish, right? I really liked that one.
But as for Batman, that has confused me forever. The love interest thing takes time away from the real story that is the heart of the Batman saga - his struggle with himself. And kicking supervillain ass.
No mention of Fantastic 4 at all?? I didnt think it was that bad, I also really liked the punisher....blade movies were cool too....too many to choose from, I liked most superhero movies that came out...the ones that sucked are usually the end of the line sequal ones...

I enjoyed the Fantastic 4 movie and Jessica ALba was superhot in it. But then I was never a fan of the comicbook so I'm not looking for detaled correctness.
I really liked the Punisher movie, of course the whole vengence theme in movies really gets me anyways. I'm also a big fan of the Blade movies.

yeah alba was damn hotttt, liked all the characters, they were really damn cool, was worried bout the thing sfx wise but turned out pretty good...like dthe way they played up him adjusting worst the most....
Punisher had alot of replay value up there with lethal weapon and diehard...I really liked the actor they got to play the punisher, was a little iffy on all the old men they had as guards and such...
My list changes order all the time, so this is in no particular order. :p
The Incredibles
Spider-Man
X Men
Batman Begins
(In no order) Superman, Batman Begins, Incredibles, the first Blade, X2, and Spidey 2 rate the highest with me.
All are good examples of the best parts of the supers genre, and are well-told, fun stuff.

See Superman as a hole is something that I grew out of, other than Smallville that is. While I loved the movies when I was younger they just don't hold water now, just too cheesy.

If its what I'm thinking of, the best way to describe it would be, "disco-era-live-action-anime."
With dialogue that would be right at home in Zero Wing.

Nope, no mention of FF 4 or (Goddess help us all) any version of the Punisher. ("Well, in the comic, his family gets killed, but we need to CRANK IT UP TO 11!!!!! Kill everyone he knows, knew, and ever will know! It'll be totally rad!")
Blade... I dunno. I don't think I'd count him as a superhero. I never read the comic, though.

Apart from your inexplicable affection for Daredevil it appears that we have the same list.
Daredevil was a pretty decent flick. I thought what's-his-face did a great job, especially as Matt Murdock. I just don't get the hate.
Now, Elektra is a whole 'nother story. :)

I hear that the director's cut is more palatable. What I saw was just...meh. Although I did like Colin Farrel's Bullseye and the guy who played Kingpin.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner fighting on a see-saw.
Colin Farrell as the most sucktastic Bullseye I ever could've imagined.
Michael Clarke Duncan looking nothing like the Kingpin.

See I liked Daredevil also but I was never into the Daredevil comicbook so wasn't looking to see that everything was "canon". Also Elektra I don't really have any problems with, again never really read her as a comicbook.
I have heard though that the director recuts of both those movies are supposed to be world different and much better.

What, because he wasn't enourmously fat and white. If you actually know your Marvel stuff you'll know that with the Kingpin its not fat but mostly muscle. And can you think of anybody else that has the prescence of Michael Clarke Duncan.

Fantastic Four made me want to bleach my eyes.
didnt think MCD was a bad kingpin at all, I thought he was great...I enjoyed daredevil...

Ditto. Enjoyed Daredevil just fine as a movie, really liked Michael Clarke Duncan as the Kingpin.
QuoteFF didnt spark my intrest enough to see it in a theater, but did enough for me to rent it, wasnt that horrible i didnt think, thought it was decent...though the ending was abit meh
I thought it was horrible. So much of it was nonsensical (Sue has to strip to "get past a police barricade" invisibly. When she arrives, she is inexplicably accompanied by Reed and Johnny...who somehow got by. Just one example).
And I know people really roll their eyes when you complain about comic continuity beihng absent, but come on!
Doom not a super genius with Powered armor and sorcery?
Just a rich fucker who gets turned into (basically) Colossus?
It was bad.
Troll like Fantastic 4 movie. Troll feel for the Thing.
Quote from: Insert Username HereAnd Catwoman. Don't forget Catwoman...
Yes, Catwoman is one of the best superhero movies of all time. And that's the honest pooka truth.
were this about the greatest comic book movies I would have a different opinion.
however, because it's about superheroes in general, i'm gonna go out on a limb here and say Star Wars. that's right, I think Luke Skywalker was a true superhero, with a personalized nemesis and very strict adherence to Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces.
after that, The Incredibles really floats my boat.
The Specials was the best superhero film to date.
Followed by Watchmen, spider-man 2, The Incredibles, The Matrix and X2
The Fuck???
Paget Brewster's hot.
Holy thread necromancy, Batman.
That said, The Avengers. No, I don't think The Dark Knight Rises is going to beat it, but it will give it a serious run for the money.
I wasn't really engaged by The Avengers, which surprised me. While it wasn't bad, I certainly didn't get the charge out of it that I did from Ironman or even TDK. Yeah, I know I'm the only one.

Not at all. I'd say while The Avengers was a very enjoyable movie it wasn't as good a movie as Iron Man or Captain America. It was the satisfyingly explosive end cap to Marvel Studios' (first series of) successful solo hero flicks, nothing more and nothing less.
Holy necro Batman! (Reaches for Bat anti-necro spray next to Bat Shark Repellant). Still, maybe it's worth asking the question again, what with a pile of Supers films out since 2006 (!)
My favourites are Watchmen, The Dark Knight, Incredibles, Batman Begins, X2, Avengers, not in any particular order. The rest range from average (Amazing Spiderman, Spiderman 1, Iron Man 2) to good (Spiderman 2, Iron man Superman II, Batman and Batman Returns, Crow - I think, it's been a while, X men first class) to terrible (Daredevil, That thing with the basketball player, Batman forever, Batman and robin, Fantastic Four, Spiderman 3, probably more I should remember but don't want to).
The genre has had its shares of hits, misses and 'oh yeah, it was ok'. The danger is that the genre will soon become over saturated and it will be mostly dross that gets turned out. See the sword and sorcery genre for an example.
The best superhero movie ever - EVER! - is The Incredibles. Seriously.
But I thought Iron Man and Avengers were great. I haven't seen Batman Begins or Captain America yet, though. What Marvel managed to pull off with their Avengers series of films was incredible.
Did watch The Incredible Hulk (2008) last night, though. I preferred the Avengers Hulk, but I can understand why he'd have had to go through the 2008 film to become that person.
Moved to Media & Inspiration.
I think the Marvel people signed Mark Ruffalo up to do a string of Hulk movies based on his Avengers performance. He more or less stole the show for me. The most impressive part about the Avengers film is that they managed to cram so many A Listers (Sam Jackson, Robert Downey topping the list) and A-/B+ listers (Black Widow, Thor, Cap America actors) and kickstarted some up and comers (Ruffalo, the guy who plays Hawkeye, soon to be in Bourne legacy) in one film without it imploding. Reminds me of the old war movies that had just about everyone who was anyone in, Bridge too far etc.
Oh, and the Hiddleston (loki) fellow shares honours with Ruffalo too.
Looking forward to watching it on Bluray at the end of September. I think it'll set new sales records, without a doubt.
er, Sin City?
Quote from: APN;559118I think the Marvel people signed Mark Ruffalo up to do a string of Hulk movies based on his Avengers performance. He more or less stole the show for me.
What I liked was how he was
used to but not
comfortable with the Hulk. I'm not sure the
character could pull off being the centre of a film, but as an ensemble member, he really works.
Of course, even with my reservation above, I would go and see a Ruffalo Hulk movie, because Marvel have more than proven that they know what they're doing.
(It's a shame that Marvel couldn't do a Superman movie, really. That would be great.)
It's hard to pick just one!
The best of the best is Iron Man, The Avengers, or Captain America, for me.
My Super Ex-Girlfriend and The Mask.
Quote from: ColonelHardisson;1070Spiderman II by a big margin.
I thought Spider-Man 2 was a lot better than the first one.
Avengers was also excellent. And a set-up for Thanos? For me, that pushes it over the edge...
So, Avengers gets my vote (which is strange because I've ALWAYS hated the Avengers comics, but a different medium can have that effect).
