This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

weak.  everything's got to be "made safe" for others these days.  i doubt they'd show speed racer or star blazers for the kids today, two of my favorite shows growing up.  all that violence in my cartoons and i turned out okay :raise:  :what:  :keke:

Heh, that brings back memories. I remember back in pre-school the girls were in an uproar about how Sesame Street was perverted, because the letter L morphed into a bare nippled fairy.

Beeber, you've got good taste in childrens programming my friend! I sing my kids to sleep with Starblazers music.

My 1 yr old daughter loves Elmo and Barney, but I don't trust Elmo. At 8 months old my daughter alerted us to a gay couple hidden amongst the families of Elmo: Families and just this week, her potty training has been blown to heck by Elmo: Let's use the potty, in which various muppets scream in terror, hide under tablecloths and wail in shell-shocked anguish when confronted with the need to go "wee-wee" or "woo-woo."  But it's not all about the unfathomable terror of using the potty there's also a three miniute celebration wherein kids holler potty words.

What's next? Elmo: Let's do character generation with (4d100/2)-1's?

On the other hand, Barney is intollerable in English, so we just watch the Spanish dub. They have adult singers for all the children and Barney sounds muy macho instead of well... like Barney. The result is a much better sounding show with more musical nuance and as an added perk my daughter can distinguish Spanish conversation. When she hears Spanish, she gets excited and asks "'Narny?"

Back on subject. NBC censors Christian language out of Veggie Tales (a Christian kid's show) and lies about it. Smoking has been censored out of children's books like Good night moon. And it's now illegal to sell censored DVD's. (Previously Christian groups gave consumers the choice to buy DVD's with the offensive bits removed, but that's illegal for now, just like the Phantom Edit) On the other hand, director "censored" movies like ET-with-no-guns and, Starwars-Guido-shoots-first are still legal.

ELMO: OOH LOOK! Dorthy's imagining Elmo playing F.A.T.A.L.!
That\'s pretty much how post modernism works. Keep dismissing details until there is nothing left, and then declare that it meant nothing all along. --John Morrow

Skyrock

That reminds me of the beginning days of Sesame Street in Germany when Bavarian Broadcasting declined to broadcast the show - because "there aren't any underprivileged children in Bavaria" (official explanation).

Though at least in Europe it is unthinkable that a show gets "unsafe for children" only because of tobacco. Violence is another issue (even Porky Pig got banned once from German broadcasting because of that), but tobacco isn't... yet.
