This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Nice little train wreck

Don't respond to criticism online is the lesson for Author's here.  Check out the comments, quite hilarious:

Awesome, what a clusterfuck.

But I mean, the blog is just a shitty review, if the author really discounts the opinions of random bloggers what does he care?

And the idea that he became a novelist in the hope it would provide a decent living, oh dear, I mean really, oh dear.

Nope, you do it for the love, or because you're driven to.

But not for the money, because the odds of making any are not good.

Should you write?  I'd think so, it might be worth PMing Ned the Lonely Donkey actually who is an incredibly nice guy and who is currently on a creative writing course which I believe is quite well regarded, but you do it for the chicks and the glory, not the money.

Balbinus speaks the truth.

If you're okay with being sellout (like me), you can actually make good money doing technical writing.  I freelance on occasion for a friend's firm, ghost-writing medical articles and educational materials.  My name isn't on the article, but I get the check, and a 5,000 word article or textbook chapter nets me about eight times what I'd get for a work of fiction of comparable length.  Plus I get to learn about nasty skin diseases, which I can use as grist for the horror/fantasy fiction mill.
For fuck\'s sake, these are games, people.

And no one gives a fuck about your ignore list.

Oh, and thanks for the link, walker.  That had me in stitches...like Balbinus said, the review wasn't worth a second look.  That's some mighty thin skin on that there author-type.

To be fair to the blogger, I meant a shitty review in that he said the book was shit, I thought the blog itself was perfectly well written.

I still think it's idiotic to go postal on some random bad review.

KenHR

Ah, I see what you're saying.  Nothing wrong with the writing in the review, just not much of substance.  Although it doesn't sound like the book had that much substance worthy of criticism.

I write for a nice living - technical writing, that is. I don't attempt fiction, and fiction writers shouldn't attempt technical writing... :D

That's a gross generalization...technical writing has helped me discipline my craft, and fiction helps me with making the technical writing interesting.

(edit: I understand the spirit of your post and I'm not trying to be combative)

It was, indeed, a gross generalization! I was just trying to keep people who think they are writers out of the field! Real writers are always welcome! It's just that people who think they are writers always think they are fiction writers. Only real writers - of any stripe - can do technical writing. No one pretends to be writing a user manual for a decade! :D

In my case, it found me.  I just happened to know someone who owns a company doing medical writing for time-pressed professionals.  He needed help, I had the time and the mostly-useless Writing degree....
