I thought it had been pretty well determined she was murdered by japanese soldiers because tney thought she was a spy.

I had heard that as well except for the "pretty much proven" part. I tis considered one of the more crack pot theories, at least in my reading.

The best theory I've seen is the one talked about in the linked article. At least thy have some sort of evidence, though it's nothing conclusive. The shot-as-a-spy thing is woven of pure moonbeams.

Back up.  Why does this matter anymore?  This is a question that doens't need answering.  She disappeared, and is far too old to still be alive, so the whole point is moot now; she's dead and gone, so let it go.
