Title: 300
Post by: RockViper on March 17, 2007, 09:48:43 PM
I just got back from seeing this tonight and I highly recommend it as a gamer movie (don't expect a history lesson). Lots of gratuitous violence, nudity and sex. I have never read the graphic novel so I don't know how true to source it is, but that doesn't matter to a SPARTAN! :haw:

Oh, it looks like the graphic novel, just moving around. I'm going to see it in a couple hours, but watching the trailers I'm like "Oh, there's that panel!".

Except the monster dudes; the giant and the fat one, anyway. I certainly don't remember them unless I missed a couple pages somewhere.

Wow.

Only one thing - I never knew Xerxes was a Gua'ould. Sure explains alot.

I've heard this joke five or six times since the release.  It has something to do with Stargate or something?

Yeah, in the TV series they're the bad guys (early on at least). Also known as System Lords, they're the one's who were our "gods" of ancient mythology.

That, and they had really weird sounding voices like Xerxes had.

That's what first made me say it (and I did, out loud). Definitely the System Lord Voice.

Well, that and being 8 feet tall with gold skin and piercings and an army of willing slaves... you know, minor similarities. :) Makes me wonder if it was a bit of an homage.

It sounded like he's been smoking cigarettes since hes was 5 years old.

I just saw the movie and it rocked as much as everyone said it did.

I saw it the other day also.  I thought it was ok, but it wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be.  I can't really put my finger on exactly why though.

The movie was great! The guy they had playing Leonidas looked like he just stepped off a vase. The movie has to win oscars for cinematography, special effects, and costumes, or there truly is no justice.

What I disliked: Xerxes, the fat executioner, the last battle scene0

What I loved: everything else.

:D

Well, if it wins an Oscar for Costumes, it'd HAVE to be for the Persians. The Spartans were... well, rather spartan!

Needless to say, the GF enjoyed it immensely. I guess its only fair that the girls get a beefcake movie from time to time.

The Spartans wore costumes? I thought they were wearing speedos and capes! The wife loved it, needless to say. :D

Yeah, I meant the Persians. :D

On the Daily show, Jon Stewart said something hilarious about the costumes, I'll paraphrase:

"The movie 300 depicts a mythical version of the battle at Thermopylae, in which 300 Spartans, along with 15,000 abs, defeated 1 million Persians."

Got back from the movie in an unholy shitstorm at home, but it was still an awesome flick.

I was spellbound from the moment the Persian riders came over the ridge at the very beginning.  I loved everything after that, even though a couple of my favorite bits from the comic were dropped.

Side note: When I got to the theater, people were lined up ten deep to get into the IMAX screening.  No IMAX for FG this time.

EDIT: The closing credits about made me shit my pants.  So much good.

One Question:

Would 300 be a good "Date Movie" or not?

Yes. Lots of action and blood and death and derring-do for you, lots of BEEFCAKE for her. My girlfriend really liked it, despite going in thinking she wouldn't.
