This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Toon: The Cartoon Roleplaying Game

Quote from: Dumarest;991696Has anyone run a successful series of Toon? If so got any tips, things to watch for and avoid, insights into how to keep the game moving fast like a cartoon, etc.? I'm thinking about trying Toon for 3 or 4 players. I've only played it once or twice back when it was relatively new.

If not Toon, then Ghostbusters...

I've only played Toon as conventions and have always enjoyed playing.

Toon looks, to me, to be a cut-down equivalent of something like HeroQuest, you have skills/abilities/powers that you can use in a very freeform way.

So, it should be usable in a campaign. You just have to maintain the level of silliness throughout, which might be the biggest challenge.

Actually for the people I usually play with that is the least of my concerns. Even when they play things straight it ends up being hysterically funny due to terrible oversights and poor planning. I figure with cartoon animals it would seem even more natural that they forget to use the right length fuse on a stick of dynamite or sever the rope bridge they need to escape later....

I think the hardest part of games like Toon is people actively trying to be ha-ha funny and doing stupid things just because they're stupid. That's pretty much never funny.

We're trying to avoid cliche cartoon types like rabbits and ducks, for the most part, unless there is a good clever idea for it.

So once characters are made up and some scenarios are thought up, I think it ought to work out okay.

Quote from: Steven Mitchell;991699I've run it several times, a few times as a series for the same characters.

Coincidentally, I played half a game with a guy named Steve Mitchell in college in Alabama (University of Montevallo).
I think I was tired and went to bed- I just couldn't get 'zany' enough.

That was probably me.  Circa 1986?

Yes.  We also played Champions, Fantasy Hero, and Boot Hill a couple of times.  My real initials are the same as my username, which was also my Champions character, so I know you can figure out which one of the guys I am.
My younger brother also hung out and played with us.

Long time, no see!

Did he ever get an alarm clock that he couldn't sleep through?  I still remember waking him up for his finals by banging so hard on the door that the whole dorm was up.  :)

Edit:  Sorry for the derail on the topic.  Took the reunion to PM.

Nice to hear from you too!  You're the only one I have gotten in contact with since then.  Have you heard from any of the rest of the guys?
The answer is, no he did NOT.  He still sleeps so sound you could fire a cannon right by his head and he would keep snoozing.

If you want to talk more, PM me and we can arrange something.

Thanks!  I joined mostly because I went to college with Steven and we had a lot of good times together gaming, but it seems like a pretty cool place, so I think I'll hang around.

Quote from: Dumarest;993108Funny thing is my kids like Cars but not much else from Pixar. And I've only seen a few minutes of any of them except The Impossibles , which I didn't expect to like. It was pretty good, though, although I didn't get why the Human Torch was changed to a Flash knockoff when the rest of the Fantastic Four stayed pretty much the same.;)

Just replace Fire with Lightning, and it's kinda the same...

Dumarest

You guys should get a Toon game going.
