This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Idrius Elba is going to be a kick ass gunslinger.

Mathew Machnahay. Is going to be a great Man in black.  I can't wait.

I'm almost tempted to pick the books up again but then I remember how much pulp and crap is in there with the good stuff.

How about telling us what you're talking about?

And do you mean Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey?

Idris Elba has been cast as Roland Deschain in the adaptation of Stephen Kings gunslinger

Warboss Squee

Yep. That's what I always envisioned when imagining Roland, a British accent.

Never heard of it, but I don't read Stephen King. I assume it's a Western of some sort?

Spike

Idris Elba is usually the best part of anything he is in, and can elevate even true, lifeless crap to the level of fine drama.... well, at least his part of it.

Luckily for me, I've got no great attachment to the Dark Tower series, so my level of Meh doesn't have to rise above... hmmm ... about my knees.

Because this just SOUNDS like a terrible miscasting, for probably the wrong reasons.  I"m sure he will be excellent as aways, but really... this is more a Chistopher Lambert, so bad its good, sort of thing, if you're going to stunt cast.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

Oh, no. Its weirder than that.  It STARTS as a post apocalyptic supernatural vengence kick, and we discover along the way that The Gunslinger is, in fact, the last Knight of a destroyed kingdom, hunting Kings Version of teh Devil Himself to a place beyond Time and Space.

Then the second book starts and it's all down hill from there....

Lost interest at "post-apocalyptic supernatural"... :)

Spike

Well, it IS Stephen King. Everything is Supernatural with him, even when its supposedly not.

Well, adding the Winchester Boys to It would be fucking Amazeballs.

no, its a reference to teh TV show Supernatural, which I personally stopped watching some six years ago (around season seven...) and is... I think... STILL GOING. The main characters are the Winchester brothers, who hunt monsters alongside their friend Castiel the angel.

I was just thinking how awesome it would be if that show shared a continuity with Stephen King's films and someone did a crossover.  Because of the word "Supernatural".

The Winchester boys are the brothers on CW TV show Supernatural. And stars of creepy slash fic...that they actually have referenced on the show.

EDIT - I just saw Spike's post. Yes, the show is still going strong-ish.

Idris Elba is a hit and miss actor. It's obvious PC casting, but he might do a good job. But hey, the producer said anyone who doesn't like the casting is a racist so that's always a good start for your marketing.

But the bigger problem is Hollywood has a poor record with translating books-2-film, so who knows how butchered King's books will be before they hit the screen.

Voros

I really liked the first book in the series but if they made that into a film you'd need Lynch or Jodowsky to make it. I quit at the book with the giant crabs cause it seemed stupid. Willing to give the films a try though.

The comment about a Brit accent is pretty odd as Idris came to prominence playing the  drug dealer Stringer Bell on The Wire where his accent was so impeccable I don't think anyone had a clue he was from the UK.

Idris Elba is one of my favourite actors, he's simply brilliant. He is not by a country mile in any way representative of Roland Deschain, very much as he was miscast as Heindall. The gunslinger is well described in both book and interviews. The casting of Idris means they're actually taking out an intense story string between him and one of his companions.

The only saving grace is unlike the abomination that was the casting of Tilda Swinton he can at least act in character.

I've never heard him without the accent.
