This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So I picked up Star Trek Adventures

It's from Modiphius based on their Mutant: Year Zero system (which is NOT 2d20).

TheDungeonDelver has been rockin' an 80's Florida campaign with it based on the Urban Legend of the Polybius Video Game.
Here's more of it.

Got it bookmarked. I wish I could get the book, but so far I have found that they are going for $75.00 and up in the US.
"Meh."

Modiphius is just the publisher. It's actually made by Fria Ligan/Free League Publishing, who recently did Coriolis as well. That's why it avoided the 2d20 bullet, and unlike Coriolis it doesn't have a stupid Doom/Threat/etc. mechanic. It made a bit of a splash because the Kickstarter was first announced not long after Stranger Things became a hit, and it's probably the perfect game for running a kids-in-the-80s campaign where science has run amok. The PDF looks good, the art is fantastic, and the lack of heavy black ink on each page should mean the books don't have a strong chemical smell like my Coriolis books did.

I'm totally uncertain about the whole 2d20 mechanic thing. The thing that grabs me is the topic -- Conan, John Carter and Star Trek, all using the same game mechanic? Those are all franchises I adore. Just not sure about the rules. :(

Haven't played them myself but from reading and looking at a couple of play through threads seem decent.
Talk gaming or talk to someone else.

Yeah, the system descriptions and examples of play I have seen have turned me away despite liking the licensed properties. One of my let pet peeves in RPGs RPGs  is publishers trying to twist a setting around their system instead of basing the system on the setting. I've yet to see an instance of the former working well, whereas the latter has given us some excellent games like James Bond 007, Pendragon, Ghostbusters, and Flashing Blades.

The setting isn't wrapped around the rules here. That's just a baseless claim.

You might not like the system, which is fine. But it's a pretty fair representation of the setting.

It depends what you want from it. There's a reasonable selection of ships and the TOS setting can be handled easily. YOu won't get every ship of course, and you don't get every race.

Actually it's exactly correct. They had a system already made and inserted it into the setting. You're either ignorant or lying if you say otherwise.

What's the evidence you have for this? The rules accomodate the setting. Give an example of the problem.

Read the #Modiphius forums where the playtest feedback keeps telling them how their current system is unnecessarily complicated, hard to explain ("It's simpler than it reads" was all but a mantra), involves pointless die rolls, prioritizes the wrong aspects (like #Phasers and the kinds of damage they do), and in general doesn't feel #Trek. And even if they decided to stick with #2d20, they could have made a version which fit the license better.

It blows my mind they dropped the ball on this too, because I think they did a fantastic job with #Conan.

Have you read the book?

Why are you using the # sign in your post? It's confusing.

I was a big fan of the CODA Star Trek even though it was short lived. I just don't think Trek is a world that I'd like to adventure in outside of the TOS era.

Well I think unless the rules offend you, there's enough TOS content in this game to work with.

I would really have liked to read CODA trek. I quite liked the LOTR game they did.

Heard good things about Mutant: Year Zero. Why isn't there a thread on that instead of the other Mutant game the OP disliked without even reading it?
