This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

No. However, the version of the Invisibility spell that is going to appear in my book will require the magister (magic-user) to take off one of his shoes and wave it around in the air. That's medieval authenticity!

What if you had some sort of Apothecary that could brew certain potions and medicines, often using toxic substances, which may or may not result in a magical effect which may or may not kill the person using it? Of course there is a wide range of peoples that could do stuff like this. On one end of the scale, you have brewers. On the other end you have alchemists and shamans and the aforementioned apothecaries who could make a wide range of substances, many of which could be considered injected poisons. You might have to consider long term effects of the use of such potions/medicines. A hallucinogenic substance could certainly induce a mystic experience and in some traditions be essential for certain rituals. I think there could be room for some D&D like potions to work as medicines or tonics. Though they may have a price. Of course some may be benign as well. The Dose Makes the Poison, so to speak and a good Apothecary could avert harmful side effects by observing a proper dosage. Of course the PCs are going to abuse that.

If you adapted something like the optional 3.5e Incantations, then apothecaries, and alchemists who have no spellcasting ability could even concoct magical potions and other concoctions. You can control availability by giving each one a recipe of ingredients that has to be procured.

Has anyone tried Ars Goetia - Faust's Footsteps - Goetic Magick for 'Old School Gaming?'Seems like it tries to do what you are aiming to do with your own work.

Work continues, albeit slowly, on this. The magic system is just about done. Magic will be complicated and sometimes dangerous but will potentially be quite powerful. Magic-users will certainly need to think and plan more than usual, and will need to find ways to get resources (probably patrons, unless they're very lucky in their social class).
