This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Dominus NoxI used to hope for a ticket with hillary as prez and Obama as her VP, but I'm afraid that the republicans would see the magic key to wrecking it.

They'd spread propaganda that the campaign was "racist" as it had a black in a subservient position to a white, and get the stupid PC types to refuse to vote for it because it was "RACIST!!!"

As to a ticket with obama as prez and hillary as VP, the goddam conservatives would claim it was "SEXIST" as the female was in the subservient position to the male.

Now I could see a Hillary/Obama ticket with the understanding that obama is there as an understudy to gain experience points for being president. That might work.

Despite my affiliations, I'd vote for obama as prex just to piss off the fucking neocons, along with most posters on SJG's forums.

I don't think there are enough roll-eye smileys for this one.

Werekoala - thank you for the quoting.

I need a good laugh in the morning.

Again,...wasn't this thread originally about Curt leaving  big Purple and Pink?

As for the political leanings of posters on other forums or even this one :

Haven't you heard? Some leaders of the black community have declared that Obama isn't really black because his ancestors didn't live as slaves. Problem solved.

Yes, yes it was.  But like a modern day Frankenstein I stood over my creation an shouted "Live!  Live!!!" as the lightning poured into its cadaverous heart, little knowing of the horror I had unleashed.  It opened its eyes, took its first stuttering steps and then threw off the shackles I had placed upon it and rampaged like the monster it truly was.

I've got a blog. Do you read other people's blogs? I dunno. You can say hi if you want, though, I don't mind company. It's not all gaming, though; you run the risk of running into my RL shit.

So,...Curt - you think he's voting for Fred Thompson or Barack Obama ?  Hilary Clinton or Condoleeza Rice?  Also , now that Curt is no longer a moderator - where does he exepend all his sarcasm?

EWC's such a fucktard he probably didn't know what fucking site he was on, let alone which forum.

Quote from: SeanchaiI can't answer nearly as well as you can...have you begun to act like some of the less virtuous moderators? I can't get into Tangency, which seems to generate the most obnoxious behavior from both the moderators and posters. (Of course, Tangency seems to be basically a cesspool, so I have no desire to read it...). I seem to remember you disappoint me with a sarcastic comment or two, but I could be misremembering.

I guess I'd ask, to you and all the moderators, if you're sarcastic, acerbic, etc. when posting, why? How does that kind of behavior from authority figures help RPGnet be a better place, which I am presuming to including being a friendlier, less sarcastic place to spend time?

Also, when you use your authority, are you going so to make RPGnet a better place or are you doing so to punish someone? If the latter, how does that really make the site better in the long run?

Seanchai

I think the only time I've been remotely sarcastic when moderating was issued a warning to Ancient History for some unbecoming behavior, noting that if he kept it up, his name could become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I was really just trying to keep the warning relatively lighthearted, however, rather than trying to be snarky.

I do my best to be polite when posting, because I prefer to set a good example. I'm not perfect in that regard, of course.

And I do try to use my authority to make RPGnet a better place. All things being equal, I'd rather not "punish" anyone. Which is not to suggest that I never take any satisfaction out of banning people who I feel deserve it... but I can say that I don't gloat over doing so.

I would like to mention that I've been around RPGnet since before it had forums of any sort. When the forums first got started, they were a pretty nice place to be. As they grew, however, things got uglier. Frankly, I wish that the moderators had clamped down on that sort of thing earlier on, rather than letting it reach Usenet levels before trying to rein it in. As much as it gets maligned, the creation of Tangency Open was, at least, a nice safety valve to draw all of the off-topic flameworthy crap away from the actual game discussions.

In any case, my personal motto is "The right thing to do depends upon what you're trying to accomplish". I wanted to make #rpgnet chat a harmonious place, so when I took it over, I clamped down on non-RPG-related discussions of religion and politics and took a zero-tolerance stance on flaming in general. Some people like that, some people don't.

Dan,

Thank you for the work you do and the attitude you take.  It does not exactly make you unique at RPGNet, but it does make you a threatened species.

Since the topic of this thread was Curt's departure, I will add that unlike some people who have chimed in here, I didn't have huge problems with his mod style, but what problems I had were actually on the rise.  This is true of other mods there too.  I believe this is due to a combination of old-fashioned mod burnout (God knows I would get tired too) -- and bad example/tone-setting from some key people.

Moderators there are more and more frequently acting like bullies.  No, not everyone by a long shot, and not all the time, but it's now not infrequent to see outright unjustified rudeness that would earn a non-mod poster a heated argument.  But because they ARE mods, talking back triggers a warning in red text, or worse.  That is why I'm posting here (and on other boards) at all.  I do not subscribe to the idea that RPGNet is the hell-hole of dictatorship some people here like to imagine; but I do think it is increasingly becoming un-fun for me.  To be honest, that makes me sad.

That sums up my impression of you fairly well.  You know I was being sarcastic earlier right?  Or am I on your IL for being a h8r?

You've always been a rather moderate voice in the moderation.

Thanks, Joe. Yes, I know you were being sarcastic earlier, and no, you aren't on my IL. I've yet to use one of those. :)
