This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Simlasa;870812Like David Johansen I've got thousands of figures, but none are relegated to just RPGs or just wargames.
They don't get much use in RPGs of late because most of the games I play are online.

Agreed, I mix and match manufacturers as long as the scale and style is somewhat of a match.

Same here, I mainly collect mine for use with my own rpg- and skirmish game projects though, and the line between those frequently blur.
But even if I discount those that is clearly more for skirmish, I still have several hundred, some taken from boardgames like Last Night on Earth and such.

As for how often they see use, I am sadly dangerously close of being someone that talks a lot, yet get no practice when it comes to gaming, and therefor the miniatures have also seen no rpg play of any kind for a few years now.
I may not dislike D&D any longer, but I still dislike the Chaos-Lawful/Evil-Good alignment system, as well as the level system.

Actually... now that you say that... it occurs to me that I do have some miniatures that I'd rather not plop down for the random pawing of players. Either they're fragile or painted extra nice or something... fine to use in a wargame where I'm usually the only one touching them... but my old Warhammer figs are generally pretty chunky and sturdy... and have less fancy paint jobs.
The 'precious' stuff is mostly newer figures I've picked up from various boutique skirmish games and mostly since I stopped running live games as much.

Quote from: RPGPundit;870786How many rpg miniature do you own? (note: not counting minis that are for board or war games)

Maybe a dozen at my current home.  A couple hundred on another continent, plus probably 50 or so Lego minifigs which were collected with the specific intention of using them as gaming minis.

Quote from: RPGPundit;870786How many miniatures have you used in the last 3 months in an RPG?

None.  I prefer purely-descriptive ("TotM") combat, augmented with rough maps on whiteboards when necessary.  You just can't capture the confusion and chaos of a battle when players are looking at a map with everyone's exact positions and can trivially count off the squares between them.

Opaopajr

Own? None.

Used in past 3 months? None. On hiatus from most map/grid RPG play, and much RPG play in general. Reason: the holidays.

Never was in the market for them. And pre-painted seems like it defeats half the hobby point to me. Unless it was a masterful mass produced paint job to be collected, which is exceedingly rare I hear, why not get other models to paint yourself or commission it?

But then I'm sure someone can speak well here about why they are so passionate about them, and maybe even the pre-painted ones too.

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

hundreds including a tone of dwarven forge. And I use dozens of miniatures in my last game.

I've never counted. Must be at least 1000. I haven't used any lately as we are gaming over video chat.

"Oh, I've got these great minis that would be perfect for this dungeoncrawling scenario, but I cant use them, because these are for wargames only!"

What Pundit should have said is: "miniatures that you actually use for rpgs, regardless of their other purposes".

All my RPG figures (~1000) are 6mm Microworld Games minis. :)

Kiero

I own zero miniatures (gave all my 40k stuff away decades ago), and have not used miniatures in the last 3 months.

We did use some for our D&D4e run, but we also used card tokens, coins and all sorts of other stuff too. I don't care what my character-representation looks like, anything will do.

I must have over a thousand; I have a few hundred Lord of the Rings minis that often get used for rpgs as well as for wargaming; I've got maybe a hundred or so Hero Clix, which I bought solely for rpgs. I do a lot of skirmish wargames, so I have Wild West, WW2, Zulu Wars, Modern, ECW, ACW, Future Warriors and generic fantasy/Warhammer (most of which get double-purposed for rpgs) and four Blood Bowl teams. I paint minis for sale and on commission too, so I've always got something on the go (I'm currently painting a Blood Bowl team for a friend) and I've sold far more minis than I've ever retained.

Easily over 300.  Yes I use them, and massive Dwarven Forge setups, every game.

None, ever since my wife game them all away to her nephews.

None, we tend to use descriptive combat and rarely need to know positions.

Well over 6,000 miniatures, all of which have been used at some point in my career in an RPG game. The last 'RPG' I ran used something like 80 figures; the one before that, none. It all depends on what the players are doing; sometimes you need a lot of stuff on the table, sometimes you don't. For me, it's always been about the game play and the game style of the group; we never divided things into genres or categories.

Spinachcat

Several hundred fantasy figs, dozen mechs, several dozen supers.
Used zero recently :(
