This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I´d point to the fact that social behaviours vary greatly from culture/country to culture/country. We have a lot of different ones in Europe!
I´m sure bigotry is big somewhere, and exists everywhere.

There´s a special kind of puritan bigotry that permeates RPG.Net. And that´s a US-based phenomenon.

Quote from: James J SkachI'm always amused when one of the biggest bigots in the place starts tossing boulders from his glass house. Fucking Australians...

JimBob - if you think the US is "babaric" with respect to biggotry, try Europe sometime.  Oh sure, they're all "Egalite" and shit.  But when they get home and are talking to you over the kitchen table, they'll tell you all about how this group is this way and that group is that way. One of my favorites is the "there's a reason those stereotypes exist."

So take your biggotry against the US and shove it up your stupid fucktard Australian ass.  If that's racists or homophobic of me to say - deal.

Oh fuck me! All this time I should have been spending my free hours in the back rooms of pubs, taking part in nationalist meetings, marching to protest against immigration because I'm European and stereotypes exist for a reason.

I have seen the light!!!

PS why use Europe to justify your insane rant against the Antipodes?  Or are you trying to justify the worst stereotypes of your nation?

Pierce Inverarity

Actually, the great Andy Warhol was right: in Western capitalist democracies people think remarkably alike. All there is is local inflections of bigotry (or anti-bigotry), etc. But people with a similar education or equivalent political convictions will find they have more in common with their counterparts in other countries than with some of their own countrymen. Nationalism is a special case, though. The structure of the argument is similar, but it prohibits cross-national solidarity by definition. But that's a good thing!

No, I'm just ranting as an example of the stupidity of it all.  Everyone is all ready to point figures and say they know what's in other peoples' hearts and minds and to generalize about peoples' race/ethnicity/gender/sexual orientation as long as it's an accepted form of bashing.

JimBob is just a particularly annoying example of it to me due to his unfounded generalized bigotry against the United States, ya know, being a citizen of that country.

See how quick everyone is to defend Europe and say I'm a horrible example of my nation?  How many of you (outside of some of the Americans here) said a word when JimBob used the toss off comment about the barbaric US, hmm? Or in other threads when makes does similar comments.

Not a one.

Why?  Because it's OK to rag on the US. It's OK to say America is barbaric, but I can't call europe a thing...nope..not here...or I'm just some ignorant yankee that's a bad example of my country.

Yeah...you guys got me there.

The RPG Haven - Talking About RPGs

Gabriel

Quote from: JamesVBecause this thread need some fucking levity in it, I present you with St. Rotwang of Indiana:

Believe in Him, for He believes in us.

No offense to Rotwang or you, or even to imply you mean anything by it other than good natured fun, but this is exactly how Curt got started on RPGnet.

Now, I'm not saying that Rotwang and Curt are alike.  The good Doctor seems always focused on fun posts, and I've never seen him in a flamewar.  If he's insulted someone, it's been accidentally with a comment which was intended to be humorous, not hurtful.  That's nothing whatsoever like Curt.

But Curt got started on RPGnet by making himself a Tangency mascot.  He was sainted in a way.  If you like really overblown hyperbolic metaphors, try this:

"Then I saw a beast rise up out of Tangency, and out of it's mouth spewed hate.  And the beast which I saw was like unto a hamster, and his roar was like unto a lion. And the modstaff gave him his power and his throne and great authority.  I saw the hamster banned, and his banning was lifted. And the whole of Tangency was amazed and followed after the hamster;  and they worshiped the hamster, saying, "Who is like unto the hamster, and who is able to disagree with him without being banned?"

Dr. Rotwang isn't the beast, nor is he even a golden calf.  I don't think he aspires to be either.  Let's not go making him one.  Down that path lies the dark side.

*And just for reference purposes, the warped biblical quote is very much given tongue in cheek.

Hey... Doc R is a good guy. In the old Nutkinland days we had that "Taking the Infraweb Way Too Seriously Award" image... that would be handy right now, but it seems to have gone... ahh, good times, if crazy ones. Compared to those, this site is sanity itself.

Chill out man, I just took his avatar at 740AM in GIMPshopped it for kicks. Which in this case is almost as ludicrous as your iconoclasm. Since very little is sacrosanct here, I expect that if anyone's ego really gets out of control, I expect that the folks around here will be willing to give that special person a very hard landing.

I know your point, as a many year vet of Big Purple, I really do. It's just that this ain't the time to be pulling it out. If someone ever starts a "Cast Off-Topic!" thread, calls any group of people a -pack? Now that's when you pull out the point and start swinging for the back seats. I might even agree with you then.

Quote from: Dominus NoxSo, I wonder if the modclique will review the bannings curt tossed out and decide aome of them were wrong?

Naaah, admitting that a ban was unjustified, now their style.

Admiting they were wrong?  No way, they would be afraid people would lose faith in their decisions.

Word.  My point, moreover was that Doc Rotwang just don't post in these sorts of "serious meta-discussion" threads other than with a one-off like "Be groovy to each other."  He's here primarily for gaming chitchat, which is something laudable.

RPGPundit

Quote from: JimBobOzI don't want to hear about RPGPundit's preference for prostitutes over genuine relationships (which he's told us about).

For the record, this is a blatant mischaracterization.

I did NOT say that I prefer prostitutes over genuine relationships. I said that Prostitutes were more honest than most women, because at least they tell you up front that they are offering sex as a business transaction to get what they want (money, in their case) rather than pretending not to and using sex as a bargaining chip in exchange for trying to turn you into a servile lapdog.

But that does not mean that I prefer prostitutes.

I vastly prefer utterly meaningless one-night-stand sex where I don't have to pay at all, either in money or the frustration of playing "relationship". :D
