This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

A Mythusmage Observation

Have you ever noticed how civilized and substantial the discussions tend to be around here? When posters get snarky and out of sorts folks tend to get on their case and settle them down. True, there are some who get all bent out of shape and engage in malicious behavior, but they get called on it publically and either clean up their act, or get the Pundit's patented "I'm displeased with you" spiel.

It looks like transparent moderation works.

The population is smaller and more like minded than it is at rpg.net.

I don't really have a problem there.  I was banned once for comparing someone to Jesus, and I got a warning for suggesting that the game with the largest player base would also have the largest portion of the catpiss men, but that's about it and in both cases I was pretty much asking for it.

However, rpg.net has become so dry, dull, and boring that I almost never post there anymore.  Why would that be I wonder.

Here, things are rougher but they're also a lot more honest and frank.  There's less playing chicken with the mods, less passive agressive anti debates, less wanking too.

For small groups of users it does anyway.

Just remember people, as long as you're inserting it into something at least once a month you're not gay so you can't get aids.

Results vary greatly with who is doing the snark, and against whom.

It's an old misconception that's been pretty common in the third world.  It's a little like the fucking a virgin will cure aids thing they've got going in Africa.  Dead wrong and very harmful.

Somehow it just seemed very appropriate to a conversation about wankers, bunny rapists, and those who try to impregnate socks.

Also if I'd said it at TBPT I'd've been banned forever!  So naturally I relish the opportunity to say it without fear!

Too true.  Believe it or not, RPG.net used to be a lot like this site.  I honestly believe that the political and emotional fallout of the 2000 US Presidential election was the great turning point for the site.  Fingers crossed that cooler heads will prevail here in the face of adversity, but a larger and, particularly, more diverse membership will test our mettle.

!i!

[Edit: For clarification, I realise that it wasn't the immediate fallout of the 2000 elections, but the run-up to the 2004 Presidential elections that really caused tBP to turn a corner for the worse.]

I hope that the Off-Topic forum is discontinued if it becomes as much of a bother as Tangency.

I'll simply take my OT discussions elsewhere, as will most people.
