This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[Conan/Hyborian Age, any system] What are/were/would be your games like?

Quote from: RPGPundit;834473Yeah, I guess, but I've always been more inclined toward the Lankhmar end of the spectrum.

I actually agree on that account, though lately I've been mixing S&S liberally with S&P, C&D, dark fantasy, mythic and swashbuckling influences, and even stuff from some Eastern genres. So I guess I'm no longer a purist.
Of course, being a purist about S&S, given that the whole thing is an exercise in swiping from other genres without the constraints of said genres, is kinda a challenging proposition in the first place:D!

I've been thinking about how I'd run a Hyborean game, and I think it would be more closer to the Savage Sword comic/magazine spectrum than anything truly Howardian, if that's a term we can use.

But I'm also not averse to a City based campaign like Lankmhar.

Whereas I find Fafhrd and Grey Mouser unreadable and unlikable. No accounting for the RPG Pundit's depravity.

S&P? Now you have me envisaging Conan crashing thru Wall Street. Would that be a bullish market? What shall become of poor Dow & Jones?

OH!  John Carter of Mars et al.  I was wondering what S&P stood for, which is odd, as I'm a fan of the genre.

...I have no idea what Matt is going on about either.

I'm disabled and on a government stipend for the rest of my life, so no.  I don't.

I ran a game heavily influenced by Kull (specifically the Shadow Kingdom) and Conan stories using somewhat simplified Stormbringer 5 rules. It was one of our coolest games ever. Those battles were brutal :D

That sounds magnificent.

Skywalker has the right of it.
Conan crashing through Wallstreet is a game that just has to exist, though:D!

The Stormbringer "Major Wounds" system is one of the best things in any RPG ever. So perfectly captures the feeling of brutal, bloody S&S combat.

Care to elaborate how it works, and what is different from the Big Golden Book of BRP:)?

I haven't run a straight Conan campaign before, but if I did I'd use Chaosium's Elric! system with Jason Durall's Conan conversion doc for it. Sprinkle in Mongoose's Return to the Road of Kings and some re-reads of some select REH stories for further inspiration, and go.

The closest I've come to this is in 2011 when I did my own conversion of Xoth Publishing's The Spider God's Bride to the MRQ2 system, and ran a number of linked adventures. It wasn't Conan, but it was sword & sorcery as all hell, and my players had a great time. These days, I don't think I'd go for a system as detailed as MRQ2. I'd be more comfortable with the abstractness of the Elric! system.

Same Major Wound Table, and same rules.
