This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Text/word document of 5e basic rules?

The minor trouble with the 5e basic rules provided by WotC is that they are in pdf form. I'd like to perform extensive editing on their text without having to copy paste into a word document for hours to get the whole thing. Does anyone know if someone has already converted that stuff into a word or text document of some sort?

Omega

I have a condensed version on the works. But it is only 25% done.

Thanks. I find it strange that something like this wasn't done within weeks of the pdf's release.

It might be easier to copy the web-based rules into a word file and format it as you please (eg: columns).

I might actually do that sometime.

Wait, are you saying there is a web-based version separate from the PDFs?

If you open the printer-friendly pdf, you can ctrl-A select all, ctrl-C copy and then Ctrl-V paste in a Word document.
It will take some time then, to format everything from single column.

My mistake! They're only Player-facing rules:

But it's a start, anyway!

EDIT: actually, there's a surprising amount of stuff in there...

It actually looks like the complete web based version of the basic rules, to me.

Don't C&P. It will only make you deal with a bazillion manual line breaks, broken tables and other oddities.
Better try those two online converters:
http://www.ableword.net/
http://www.pdfonline.com/pdf-to-word-converter/

They have given me good and very workable results for files that were much fancier than the 5e basic rules.

Yeah if you're copying + pasting from a PDF, go with one of those converters.

Copying from the website ain't too bad. I just pasted the Race section into word, selected all and removed all formatting, put it into 2 columns and it's not too shabby.

I admit to being curious, as I am trying to think what would warrant such effort that 3x5 index cards or post-it notes cannot do.

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Evaluating possible projects for upcoming campaigns. I feel if you're going to re-skin a system it's better to be as thorough as you can, it increases player confidence and buy-in.
