This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The new Malifaux RPG, with card-based mechanics. Anyone pick it up, read or play it yet? Any thoughts?

Spinachcat

Nope. Please tell us about it!

TristramEvans

Well, here's the video advert for it from the kickstarter campaign Wyrd did:

I've been looking for reviews online, but not much buzz around it.

Warboss Squee

That cover very much reminds me of Dresden Codak.

Very cool.

Looks steampunk, which sucks, and uses card based mechanics, which also sucks. I now know all that I need to about the game. Nice artwork, though.
"Meh."

Interesting in that they are following PP's path (which really I guess was GW's path originally).
First - miniatures wargame with a very unique setting that sells a lot of minis, and allows for a lot of world building through fluff.
Second - an RPG expression of the setting that is tied more to the wargame as far as mechanics go.

Seems like if you want to get rich in the RPG industry, introduce your IP as a miniature wargame first.
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

Yes, Sean Connery\'s thumb does indeed do megadamage. - Spinachcat

Isuldur is a badass because he stopped Sauron with a broken sword, but Iluvatar is the badass because he stopped Sauron with a hobbit. -Malleus Arianorum

"Tangency Edition" D&D would have no classes or races, but 17 genders to choose from. -TristramEvans

Jerram

Except PP started with Iron Kingdoms as an RPG then did Warmachine.  Granted the first IK was d20 based and there most recent one is much more similar rulewise to WM.

I thought Warmachine was in 2003 and Iron Kingdoms 2004, but you're right in that they did a d20 RPG way before the new one.

Helldorado is next on the Warmachine-to-RPG path I'm hoping.  Or maybe Infinity.

Infinity RPG was announced... last year, I think.

Given that Cipher recently announced that they are no longer selling Hell Dorado by distribution (direct order only now), I wouldn't get your hopes up. :(

PP did the Witchfire Trilogy of modules for 3.5. It wasn't a full RPG yet. Around the same time they released the first Starter sets for Warmachine with just quickstart rules. Once the minis game kicked off did they release a full Iron Kingdoms RPG using OGL. The latest IKRPG is no longer OGL, and uses its own system which more closely adheres to the established setting without having to cram d20isms into it... The new IKRPG is a great system itself.

As to Through the Breach, I'm curious about it, but the only person I know who has it, has not had a chance to read it since receiving his Kickstarter package.

The released Male/Female models that are multipart so you can customize to fit your RPG character. The Wyrd plastics are amazing.
Quote from: ExploderwizardStarting out as fully formed awesome and riding the awesome train across a flat plane to awesome town just doesn\'t feel like D&D. :)

I have no idea, hence the thread. All I know is that its a card-based resolution, and is apparently similar to the minis game. But Ive never played that either. Just saw the book for sale in my FLGS, flipped through and though the art was decent and the setting somewhat evocative, and came back home and posed this question to the last RPG-themed online community I frequent after failing to find any sufficient info online regarding actual play.

Thats a shame, because that setting is incredible. Like Pablo Picasso, Goya, Louis L'Amour and Clive Barker all got together to create a world.

One will at least still be able to order Hell Dorado minis online for a while, which I've been doing for about a year now.
