This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Chill third edition

There is a new Chill in the making. Like so many others it's kickstartered this time by Matthew McFarland.

Does this game have a lot of fans around here? I never played it, but it looks like a "classic" modern horror rpg.
May I say that? Yes, I may say that!

I liked Chill conceptually, it was plain old monster movie horror.  The PCs were part of a secret organization that deals with supernatural threats and have access to a form of white magic that's separated from any question of divine or sacred matters.

The system was a pretty bog standard universal table and weapon damages weren't even differentiated.

If they stick to the core goal of fast introduction (something Pacesetter pretty much pioneered) and ease of play it might be worth a look.

Check out Goblinoid Games' Cryptworld for Chill without the serial numbers but with all the old school mechanics in place.

I like Chill, but I passed on the Kickstarter. Two reasons:

1. It's based on Mayfair Chill (2E), not Pacesetter Chill (1E).
2. 97% of the author's gaming credits are for White Wolf.

I'll read some reviews when it comes out, but I fully expect the new edition to be 1990s goth slasher movie punk nihilism, instead of Hammer Horror camp. Plus Storyteller-quality mechanics, and a fat book.

Yep. Besides Their basically not releasing it till almost a year after the kickstarter ended? They didnt have a rough draft before starting the kick starter? Would make me suspicious of success. May be just me though. More power to them. (Oh, and if you cant wait or it turns out to be vaporware Chill 2nd ed is still available. Or better yet Cryptworld)

I like Kevin Crawford's KS method (Sine Nomine / Stars w/o Numbers) where he only does his KS once the book is going into final draft. Backers can get a rough draft up front and that certainly adds to a feeling the project will be completed in a timely manner, aka really just waiting for art and layout.

I'm a huge Chill 1e fan so I'll check this out if it ever materializes.

Well, it is Blackhat Matt. So besides the usual pretentious bs about "humanism" in a horror setting, blablabla etc., he has a fairly long list of books he wrote and/or developed. So I think it will be produced. All in all Chill isn't that much different from the blue books or mortal line of the nwod. It's modern horror. Ghosts, monsters, the supernatural, maybe some dark magic etc.

I would be into running a "Hammer house of Horror" style Horror mini-campaign one day, but if this new edition of chill isn't in that style, I probably wouldn't be interested.

I remember when the 1st edition of Chill came out many years ago, but I never tried it as I was already play CoC at the time, so didn't really have time for it.

I'm not that interested in there being an organization dedicated to eradicating monsters from the world. If I were to run it, I'd want to just have characters thrown into the supernatural knowing nothing and working it out from there.

Matt

They're just using the Chill brand name; it's not Chill at all. In fact the new Chill is already out and called Cryptworld.

I believe SAVE is in Chill 3rd and not in Cryptworld. But I check it out.

I'd be interested in that too.
It'd be worth paying the small price for the PDF and giving cryptworld a go if that's the case.

You know what I'd do if I was in charge of Crypt World?  Replace SAVE with Jesuits.

That's a crazy good idea.

Cryptworld does not have SAVE, Chill 3rd does. Chill 3rd also has *drum roll* Chill Tokens:

Quote from: Chill 3rd Kickstarter pageIn addition to the dice, we've added a system of Chill tokens. These are simple chips or coins that have two different facings (coins work; heads is "light," tails is "dark").

Players can "flip a chip dark" (turning a light chip to the dark facing) to add to their target numbers (before or after  a roll!), to sense the Unknown, to use their training in the Art, and,  in truly dire straits, to save a character's life.

Of  course, once a chip's dark facing is showing, the Chill Master can flip  the chip light to activate a creature's Disciplines of the Evil Way, to  hinder the characters in minor in-genre ways ("I'm not getting any  reception!"), or to add to a NPC's target number.

 I can very well live without SAVE if it means avoiding *drum roll* Chill Tokens. So, Cryptworld it is!

Cryptworld is pretty good, and essentially Chill in all but name. The two companion games, Rotworld and Majus, can be mined for additional ideas.

WTF are Chill Tokens? Coins?
It takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance.
