This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Always had a soft spot for these guys.  However, unlike the more modern look of them, I like the bulky 1e version.  In fact, here is the 5e version, and the second image is an illio I had recently commissioned for Felk Mor.

D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

jadrax

That will teach you to dump Cha.

Saplatt

Yeah, in this case I like the older art better. This just doesn't scream out "hulk" to me.

Good news is that people using CHA as a "dump stat" may need to think twice.

As the spells and monsters emerge, I'm seeing a greater spread of ability based saves, which is just fine with me.

No shit! I just used Umberhulks (well their tunnels and the remains of the people they killed) in my last session. I loves me some Umberhulks. so this is perfect.

Gold Roger

I love these guys. They utterly tore me apart the first time I played Baldurs Gate 2.

A DC 15 save every turn for every character that doesn't want to fight blind is quite nasty. With the ability to surprise attack from solid rock, it gets even harder.  Bet they will account for a few TPKs in 5E.

I approve.

Amusingly, abilities that force a mental save should work quite well on Umber Hulks.

Mr. Kent

I love the new art for the umber hulk! The old art was fine, but those little eyes make it look Muppety. Also, yaya for CHA saves.

Natty Bodak

I dig the new art for this fellow.
Festering fumaroles vent vile vapors!

Omega

I am in the "Dont like the new bug look" for then or the Rust monster and hook horror. And I like bug monsters. I just think these changes were needless.

Its like putting legs on a beholder...

Marleycat

The look is weird but okay and makes sense in a weird way but I do prefer 2/3e's bulkier look.
Don\'t mess with cats we kill wizards in one blow.;)

cranebump

Hate the new look. Always did like the monster.
"When devils will the blackest sins put on, they do suggest at first with heavenly shows..."

BarefootGaijin

That actually looks kind of scary!
I play these games to be entertained... I don't want to see games about rape, sodomy and drug addiction... I can get all that at home.

Necrozius

That memory-affecting effect is really cool. I had never really looked at this creature's stats before (to me it just looked like any other brute monster): did it always have this interesting encounter ability? I like it! I'll use that specifically as an example to players on how each ability score will be important...

Bill

Umber Hulk fanboy here. I use them a lot, especially in dark sun, drow, spelljammer campaigns. Neogi need their Umberhulk muscle.

One of the best adventures ever involved level 1 characters in 1E battling kobolds in a cavern and discovering the kobolds God was an umberhulk.
the characters had to pull rabbits out of their hat to defeat the Umber hulk.
Miraculously, no character was actually killed.

Anyway, here is what I don't like about the 5E umberhulk.

Strength should be much higher. It claws through solid rock.
Damage it inflicts should be much higher.

Nothing I can't tweak though.

Exploderwizard

I prefer the older art but the new image isn't bad by any means.

I'm just happy that confusion is actually confusing again and not extreme short duration mind control.
Quote from: JonWakeGamers, as a whole, are much like primitive cavemen when confronted with a new game. Rather than \'oh, neat, what\'s this do?\', the reaction is to decide if it\'s a sex hole, then hit it with a rock.

huh?
Quote from: ExploderwizardStarting out as fully formed awesome and riding the awesome train across a flat plane to awesome town just doesn\'t feel like D&D. :)
