New starter set as future collector's item?

I was going to wait for the DMG to buy the trio of books, but couldn't wait any more.

 I also considered buying two more copies to keep one as a collector's item, and another one for when my kid is old enough. Anyone else considering keeping an unopened copy as a collector's item , or done it already?

I already have (see my full circle thread).  But I don't think the 5e starter will be any real collector item itself.  I have an unopened box because it fits well with my unopened Holmes set.  Hence my "full circle" phrasing.  The context is what I find interesting there; them together and not apart
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

I wouldn't do it (as I'm not buying any D&D products at all), but I bet you'll be able to sell it for mucho dinero on eBay in a decade or three. How I wish I had my old toys and games...!

Doubtful. You will be able to buy shrinkwrapped copies of this starter set 25 years from now for cheap prices.

The only way this will ever be a collector's item is if it's the last starter set ever released for D&D.

Usually if you consider something might become a collector's item, a multitude of others are as well, and that usually means it will never be a collector's item.

Not true. But it's true that anybody that collects games to never play them is a giant nerd and Sacrosanct is a Grand Poobah of Nerds.

d&d is the only game I have like this though.  I don't know about grand poobah or anything.  Also, I'm a bit surprised at some of the reactions.  We all have books and games we never really played sitting on our shelves.  If it were the only Holmes set in existence I suppose I could see the point.  But no one is suffering because I have an unopened copy, and games don't have feelings, and no one is being prevented from playing it.  It's not like I'm hoarding them for myself

It's OK to have an unopened copy as long as you have an opened copy. :D

I have three DC Heroes 2nd edition boxed sets, one of which is still in shrink and I still look for them on eBay from time to time. Best boxed set ever.

Maybe I'm weird (more likely in a low spot) but I only have 2 plastic tubs of books. I already gave away 2 five shelf double stacked books away and more 10 years ago. I only buy what I will actually run/play or my circle will run. And for the latter I limit myself to player facing books only. I have maybe 30-35 books maximum.

You're a nerd just deal with it.:)

Its mass produced. Its not going to be a collectors item since theres going to be tons of these things on the market for a while and then TONS on the secondary market as their usefullness to some will be limited.

I very much doubt they'll have huge collectible value, there's going to be a lot of these on the market.  It's unlikely that the price of a used one (or even an unused one) will significantly increase in ten or twenty years.  

Of course, if you wait about 100 years almost everything becomes a valuable collectible.

I have no books or games I have not played extensively that were not given to me as gifts or inherited in some way.

If I buy it I buy it to play.

Bet you wish you had invested the money from the Holms set in Gold or Microsoft shares. Just like I wish I had bought Bitcoin at 30c  .... :(

After I inherited my mum's books and my uncle's books I hit about a 8 foot stack of 1e and 2e books. Kept 1 of each and gave the rest to a charity shop.. I kept the 4000 novels, to the wife's chargin and had a carpenter cover all my dining room walls in bookcasing to store them all, then (about 200 feet of books in I had to buy some more bookcases :)

Funny thing I only bought 1 book case and my comics to Singapore and cut my RPG stuff down to Mage, SW, Traveller and Amber. Although all the stuff I played since has been homebrew apart from the current M&M game.

I did bring a fairly large collection of magic cards I have yet to use.
