This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Has anyone ever played the Stargate SG-1 RPG by AEG? Was it any good? I know it was based on d20, but was it more like Spycraft? Or more bog standard d20? Just curious. I remember it in stores but never checked it out.

It's a Spycraft variant. I don't know much more than that.

Yes, my group played the hell out of it when it came out - we actually bought extra core rule books to ensure we could keep things moving faster.

It was great fun, very much in the d20 Spycraft mode, but honestly I think we could have gotten the same or similar results using just about any other system. That said, I'd still recommend it - very well written and some of the sub-systems (planet generation, for example) are great.

Have it, but haven't played it.
Has LOTS of worldbuilding generators for random planets, cultures, etc.
Uses the standard Spycraft classes.
Career modifiers depending on which agency/government/planet/species you are playing, with a Prime class specifically for the Jaffa.

We played a couple solid campaigns with it -- one a normal SG campaign, and the other "SG-0, the Black Ops team" version.  It used a mild variant of Spycraft, somewhere between Spycraft 1e and 2e.

It's really worth it for the ideas -- fans of sandbox play will love the random generators in the back, metric tons of them, while fans of the SG universe will like the books on System Lords and undiscovered worlds.  It's highly recommended by me.

Never played it; I would imagine that if it was going to do a good job of Stargate it damn well better have random-world-generators.

It does, in spades. You might want to pick up a used copy off eBay or something just to check them out, since you're a random-tables guy.

I loved it.  Bought just about everything that came out for it, played it every chance I could, introduced non-RPG people to RPGs using it, had loads of fun.

The SG-1 Worlds Generator is one of the best I have seen.
Blackmoor grew from a single Castle to include, first, several adjacent Castles (with the forces of Evil lying just off the edge of the world to an entire Northern Province of the Castle and Crusade Society's Great Kingdom.
