This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Why do we not have a Gencon thread?

Quote from: Archangel Fascist;680199It's this week, you know.

May as well as some content to this thread: I'm definitely playing 5e (crossing my fingers on this one) and I hope to try Edge of the Empire and Torchbearer.  I may or may not overspend on knickknacks and games.

No Thread?

Probably because GEN CON charges too damn much just to go in and shop in the vendor's room.

At least ORIGINS has had a bargain entry price the past 3 or 4 years.

ONLY way that GEN CON is affordable - is if someone else is paying for the trip or ticket (Business you're working for, the con itself...etc)

D&D has been dead for some time, now. 5e playtests continue to confuse people, with no clear drive/goal/endgame in sight.

WW is dead.

GURPS and HERO are dead.

Well, HERO is dead but refuses to admit it.  GURPS is not dead, but no one can tell the difference.

I'm not going. I might be going to GDC though in San Francisco in March. Anyone here been to GDC?

The most expensive part of Gencon is the hotel.

Very true. Dining can be done cheaply. They are countless ways to get a badge for the show--granted, most of them involve putting in some hours, but it's usually doing something at least somewhat fun.

But the hotel....Indianapolis, in order to pay for its admittedly awesome football stadium and make other downtown upgrades to increase the likelihood of hosting large events, has one of the highest hotel taxes in the nation.

Three or four of us are starting a fund right after Gen Con towards buying a hotel room for next year. If we want to stay in a hotel connected to Gen Con, it'll be around $200/night. That's not much to some folks, but added up over 4 days...it's hard to justify when you have a family. That's why folks bundle into hotels at Gen Con 7, 8, 10 people deep.

The room can be expensive.  I usually try to stay by the airport or a little south of town.  Driving in every day sucks, but $50 a night is awesome.

I'm staying downtown this time, packed a few deep.  I'm not sure if I'm going to like that since I usually room with one or two people.

30,000-40,000 people disagree with you every year.

Not necessarily true.  I live on the west coast.  Travel alone is between $600-$800.  I can find a place to stay cheaper than that.

Just because someone buys something, doesn't mean they can afford it.  Just look at credit card debt in the US.

Granted, it is affordable to a lot of folks who aren't sponsored, but it's just as dubious to say that everyone who goes can afford it.
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

It's a shame Gencon Socal didn't work out.  I sympathise.  Similar reasons keep me out of the West Coast conventions.

I agree with this.

I don't think I've claimed otherwise (yet).  I would say that whether or not someone can actually afford to go to gencon, the fact that they're there means they've disagreed with Koltar's statement.  I concede that some spend more than they should.

I also dispute the statement that the "ONLY" way to afford Gencon is for someone else to foot the bill for the trip and/or ticket.
