This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Dark Dungeons: The Movie - On Kickstarter

I wonder if they can talk WotC and Pat Robertson to both back this movie...

(EDIT: If you think this belongs in Media then please move it.)
"Meh."

The Traveller

Huh, almost makes me want to play D&D again. I'm in for twenty bucks, would have been ten but they used the word 'mendacity' in a sentence, and vocabulary should be encouraged.

"What else are you meant to do with dark and dangerous powers?"

Pure awesome.

I am so glad Jack Chick doesn't take shit from Mike Stackpole. The world must know the Truth about the Cthulhu mythos!

Heh, you think Jack Chick has some other motivation than money?
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

Yes, Sean Connery\'s thumb does indeed do megadamage. - Spinachcat

Isuldur is a badass because he stopped Sauron with a broken sword, but Iluvatar is the badass because he stopped Sauron with a hobbit. -Malleus Arianorum

"Tangency Edition" D&D would have no classes or races, but 17 genders to choose from. -TristramEvans

Hopefully someone will also follow it with the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version.

Um..... I think the movie itself will BE the MST3K version.

Making a movie on a 12.5 K budget? It has to be top notch right?

Quote from: Old Geezer;724252At some point it seems like D&D is going to disappear up its own ass.

Actually Jack Chick is apparently a man of the mystery - there is a notion that Chick Tracts may actually be the most elaborate and profitable trolling in history.
Furthermore, I consider that  This is Why We Don\'t Like You thread should be closed

Anything that consistently, perfectly insane has to be artificially constructed.

Chick himself is exactly what he presents himself as - a religious wingnut of the first order (go read his screeds on Catholics, if you want a real laugh).

I can't help but wonder, though, just how much communication was had over the exact nature of the proposed film. The Q&A questions make it very clear that this film is a parody. However, the guy behind seems to grasp the idea that the best, and funniest parody, is one that's played absolutely, perfectly straight. So we could end up with a film that blatantly makes fun of the film that Chick is perfectly happy with, as it accurately represents his own views.

Daddy Warpig

That's hilarious. I'd watch it — once.

They should reach out to Stephen Colbert. He might help them out with some free publicity.

Honestly, I don't think Jack has a clue. If there's one thing I've found most common in zealots, it's an inability to identify irony and satire.

He probably has a clue now though.

Also, it's not like this will be the first time a film director/producer absolutely destroys an authors work in the translation :)

From the Kickstarter's comment section, after some backers expressed concerns about Chick ending up with their money:

QuoteI wrote Chick Publications Inc. explaining that I won $1000 in the lottery and that I wished to film Dark Dungeons. The tone and style of that letter was _very similar_ to that of my Kickstarter video. No where in that letter did I tell a lie just as no where in my video do I tell a lie. Every sentence was true. The only promise I made in that letter was that I would do my best to fully bring "Dark Dungeons" to life on the silver screen and that is a promise I intend to fulfill.

Chick Publications, Inc responded to my correspondence by giving me the rights to do a video of Dark Dungeons. They waved any fee to do this so that I could spend the entire $1000 on making my video. (I have already spent the entire $1000 in pre-poduction costs for the video.) They also turned down my request to obtain the merchandise rights to Dark Dungeons so I only have the right to film Dark Dungeons and can not make "Dark Dungeons the Flame Thrower" as I had wished.

They said that I would have the copyright to my video and the only stipulation they gave me was somewhere in the video I should include the following message, "Story based on "Dark Dungeons" by Jack T. Chick, LLC Copyright 1984" and I intend to do so."
