This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Anyone actually played RQ6 yet? Opinions?

A few people have asked about a practical demonstration video, so I'll give it some thought. I guess one way of doing it would be to show practical applications of the rules, such as combat and magic, in short 'easy to grasp' nuggets.

I'll discuss it with Pete and we'll give some though to moving it forward.

Excellent. I hope I'm not coming off as too abrasive when I criticize the game you worked on, Lawrence. I'm just such a RQ3 grognard I look at the new games and really try to determine what they'd add to my game table, whether they'd be a positive or a negative compared to my go-to version of the game.

The fact I remain open to the discussion and keep asking questions should tell you how I feel about it. I recognize a lot of good thought went into it. My main worry at this point, to be honest, is that I play mostly with people who don't want to worry about the rules' intricacies or have a foot-long checklist of stuff to look at every round to just do what they want to do with their characters.

If the player has to know from the inside out how combat works before being able to play, it's not going to do it for me. I worry there's just too much "granularity" to RQ6's rules, and/or mechanical steps in combat, in particular, if you see what I mean.

I don't think there is too much granularity. It might appear that way, because we've taken the time to cover as many eventualities as possible and explain how to handle them, but when played, combat is very quick to resolve.

Roll to hit
Roll to defend
Hit gets through? Calculate damage and reduce if there was a successful defend attempt, and according to armour.
Generate a Special Effect? Apply it.
Note effects.
Rinse and repeat.

All the mechanics function to an underlying set of very similar principles which, once grokked, are easy to understand an apply according in the future. So although it looks like a lot of crunch, in play, it does become background.

Similarly, I find the game too granular, but I think I'll buy it in any case 'cos I like collecting RPG books.

What I really want to know is what creature is that on the sofa? You can just see it moving occasionally down by your right leg. I suspect it's a cat's tail, but it may be more sinister than that....
