This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Anyone actually played RQ6 yet? Opinions?

I bought RQ6 some weeks back and seeing as I already play Legend/Elric regularly, it wasn't hard to get my head around it.

However I haven't actaally tried out playing RQ6 yet.
Has anyone had a go?
Opinions?

what's it like compared to Legend/MRQ2?

Well I was a playtester (as I was for MRQ2) so yes but clearly my opinions aren't neutral. I've also just finished a little 3-part urban s&s scenario using RQ6 for my playgroup while trying to free up some time to finish my 4 year old Gloranthan campaign.

Basically it plays the same as Legend most of the time only more polished. There aren't so many wasted combat manoeuvres (special effects SE) and even more so than Legend, combat is often decided by choice of SE meaning that the opponent usually surrenders before you kill them. Ultimately everything knits together much better. Getting rid of fiddly modifiers helps keep the game about imagination rather than trying to eek a +5% here and a +5% there.

I really like the way that theism (divine magic) finally feels believable and atmospheric at the same time.

Ultimately what it feels like is a case of "ahh so that's what they were trying to do with MRQ2." Obviously I don't agree with everything but those are down to personal preference. Looking at the two systems, I don't think there's anything I would use in Legend in preference to RQ6. Not that there's anything wrong with Legend, just that RQ6 to my eyes does everything just a little bit better.

Chaosium RQ2 - Sean Connery (the original and for some the best)
Chaosium RQ3 - Roger Moore (hasn't aged well but popular at the time)
RQ AiG - tried to sign up Pierce Brosnan but lawyers got involved
Mongoose RQ - George Lazenby (flawed but not without merit)
MRQ2 - Pierce Brosnan (nice looks but didn't sell well)
Legend - Timothy Dalton (with the serial numbers filed off)
RQ6 - Daniel Craig (big budget brutality, feels more Bond than Bond.)

Thanks for the views, funny analogies! :D

Anyway, my gaming group are going to try it out next week, just some test combats and stuff. We usually play Legend/Elric.
I'll post opinions next week.

Daniel Craig definitely kicks ass as Bond, but the Pierce Brosnan era had promise with Goldeneye, but it become more over the top Roger Moore-era as the movies went on.  Still, Brosnan had one of the best Bond scenes in The World is Not Enough, when, after he frees M and kills Electra, he stops to kiss the dead Electra before he chases the terrorist guy, as M looks on almost in horror as she gets a glimpse at what Bond really is.

Sorry, but I haven't run RQ6 yet. :D

Yes, Sean Connery\'s thumb does indeed do megadamage. - Spinachcat

God, I hope not. Brosnan was one of the best Bonds ever in my book (and Die Another Day maybe the best recent Bond flick); I think Craig's Bond is too serious, too somber, too fucking complex. I like my 007 suave, cocksure and witty. Then again I am a fan of Roger Moore's take on 007.

I'm listed as a 'playtester' for RQ6, but I haven't played the 'completed' version of RQ6 yet.  I was in Loz's MRQII 'Elric' campaign last year, and he introduced some RQ6 elements into the game towards the end, but that's about it.

However, I will be playing in a RQ6 game, also run by Loz (Lawrence Whitaker), in 8 days.  Quite looking forward to it!

I would agree with deleriad that RQ6 seems to do everything somewhat better than Legend/MRQII.

Man what.

It's not Bond if the actor's not overdoing it.

And Die Another Day is a nearly flawless execution of the Bond formula. Madman? Check. Doomsday device? Check. Memorable henchman? Check. Bond girl(s), one of whom turns out to be evil? Check. Exotic locations? Check. Scientifically improbable high-tech plot devices? Check. Gadgets? Check.

Then along comes Daniel Craig, playing a taciturn and unsubtle British agent who happens to be called James Bond, and goes for a deep psychological portrait of an angst-ridden man with a checkered past... not a bad movie per se, but certainly not what I expect from my Bond flicks. It felt more like a British-accented Jason Bourne clone, than a Bond flick.

Oh God, I'm a Bond grognard. :o

That is a very nice presentation of the physical book and the rules.

Any chance we get to see some actual play on YouTube? I'm particularly interested in an example of combat as it is being run by the authors of the game.

Thank you! Glad it didn't put you off... ;-)

A few people have asked about a practical demonstration video, so I'll give it some thought. I guess one way of doing it would be to show practical applications of the rules, such as combat and magic, in short 'easy to grasp' nuggets.

I'll discuss it with Pete and we'll give some though to moving it forward.
