This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Help me decide: ACKS or DCC

I saw the DCC book in the store today. IT WAS HUGE. ALmost Talislanta 4E huge, but not quite 5E Fred Hero Huge.

Still, looks pretty for a black and white game.

I'd probably go with ACKS, but that's because it needs no extra weird dice.

Goodman games should sort out a deal so you can buy all the weird dice needed for DCC alongside the book either on there site or in stores coz it's gonna be a pain finding those dice for alot of people(i found a site that sells dice but even that place only has a few of the dice DCC uses beyond the regulars).

ACKS i cant cmment on as ive yet to see a copy in a UK store so it pretty much doesnt exist at this point as far as i can see.

Go for either imo as both seem to deal with parts of the fantasy genre differnt enough from one another in unique ways....or just buy AD&D since WOTC just reprinted the books :)

The main thing to note in this kind of decision is that ACKS is basically D&D, whereas DCC most definitely it not D&D; its something very closely related to D&D, but I think its sufficiently apart from the standards of D&D (to the extent that it doesn't even use the same Ability Scores), that this could make a big difference to the potential customer... in one direction or the other, depending if what he wants is a good D&D ruleset, or something that ISN'T actually a D&D ruleset but that a D&D player could expect to like.

I've talked to Joseph about this, and even have pushed for a boxed set version of DCC RPG. At this point it's not the direction he wants to go, but I'm hopeful that eventually we'll get something done.

Keep in mind that most of the dice can be easily simulated with regular polyhedral dice if you use a "control" die. We playtested DCC for weeks before I found any special dice and it played fine.
