This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Ghost Whistler

Trailer

Trailer for the new Dredd movie called Dredd about Judge Dredd.

This ain't the Mega City 1 I grew up reading about.
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

Being faithful to the visuals didn't exactly help the previous Dredd movie, now, did it. :D

I expect a decent action flick, no more.

I think its best to take these things on their own terms. For example, I dislike John Carter because it is a shit movie consisting of a bunch of plot devices hung together so as to look kind of like a story and the acting and casting are both shit, not because it's a bad retelling (which it is).

I don't think it was the visuals that were the problem...even the cast was half stellar (Armand Assante, Jurgen Atreides, and Max Von Sideways are all good - Rob Schneider and Stallone, notsomuch).

But MC1 has to look like MC1, sorry that's a dealbreaker for me. This may be a decent enough scifi/cyberpunk action flick, but the fuck if it's Joe Dredd, and so say Rowdy Yates block!

Stallone's Dredd is one of my favorite bad movies, evry few years my wife and I rent and have a double feature with Congo.

The visuals remind me of the original Assault on Precinct 13 which was (according to a Dredd fanatic I studied sci-fi with) a big influence on Dredd so in a sense it is back to the roots...

Well in the same sense Batman Year 1 is "back to the roots" despite it featuring characters who wouldn't appear in Bat-continuity for 30-40 years.

Looks interesting, though I'm pretty sure they showed all the good parts in the preview.

Ghost Whistler

What strikes me the most:
1. how flat MC1 looks. It isn't, it's a massive mess of different levels and increasing poveryt the lower you go. It's a crazy quilt of quasi futuristic city blocks and buildings. There is, for instance the Statue of Judgement (a giant judge) that completely dwarfs the statue of liberty, and the whole city is built directly on top of new york.
2. Dredd seemed to be the only person wearing a helmet. Consequently he looks silly. I also don't recall him waxing philosophical on the city so much. Dredd's a product of the system, literally (he's a clone), the law is the law. That's it. No ruminating on the nature of the city. He just assumes everyone is guilty of something. Of course in MC1 they are. :D

I think that's for the same reason he was the only main character with his helmet on for most of the Stallone movie: The other mains are Rookies and Rookies are dumb enough to lose their helmets ;)

I found the trailer a disappointing action-fest, but after reading the wikipedia page about the film and the strange things they're trying to do with it, I'm not optimistic.

Looks like a rockin shoot-em-up afternoons entertainment, but his chin doesn't seem to be big enough. This guy is where its at.

I'm glad Karl Urban got the role, as he's actually a very good actor. He just tends to get into action flicks with poor writing (which I really hope doesn't happen here).

Seriously, look up his episodes in the Xena series, where he played Julius Caesar.

APN

Had high hopes for this, then saw the trailer. Now no hope :( It's a standard cop vs building full of thugs sort of thing, which Bruce Willis did a while back.

At least the Stallone thing sort of had judges looking like judges and some things from the comic, before it turned to drivel. Demolition man, from around the same time, was a more fun flick though.

Maybe Dredd is one of those characters not suited to the big screen yet.

Yeah; from the trailer, it looks like someone forgot the "On top of" bit. MC1 does not look like movie-LA mixed with movie-NY. MC1 should give urban planners nightmares just thinking about it.

Oh well. I actually liked the Stallone movie, except for THAT SCENE. It got that MC1 is a strange place.

I'm under the impression that 2000AD Dredd has mellowed somewhat over the last decade, but I haven't picked up a prog for a decade now.
