This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Am I an Asshat?

So, I posted here on the Troll Lord Games forums to complain about a defective ebook I purchased. I was a little surprised by the response, especially from Steve Chenault who chastised me for 'demanding' an apology.

Do you think my complaint was justified or am I just another Internet Asshat?

The "I DEMAND AN APOLOGY! harrumph" bit was douchy, yeah.  But initially I think it was a valid statement.

You demanding an apology AT LEAST!!!ONE! is a bit douchey, yes. Smacks of customer entitlement-rage. It's BS. You could have expressed the same complaint in more constructive terms.

JamesV

The complaint: Justified. I agree with you point of view. I don't see why a good RPG ebook couldn't have plenty and properly working links.

Demanding an apology: Rolled a 1 for diplomacy? Maybe it's years of customer service work talking, but statements like that make people defensive, and in the world of complaints, that's counterproductive.

Save the venting for your buddies and in public focus on what's wrong and how that affects you as a loyal customer.

This would seem like entitlement type behavior.

In a non-rpg case I'm aware of, I remember some guy I knew who demanded an apology from a store for selling him something he was not satisfied with.  (This guy was a younger relative of an acquaintance).

This particular individual was slightly "mentally challenged", and never really learned how to conduct himself in public up to that time.

This guy was a Metallica fanatic back in the late 1980's, but found he didn't like the "... And Justice For All" record.  So he demanded an apology from the record store for selling him a "sucky" record.  The store clerk offered to give him a refund, largely to get rid of him.  But this guy kept on demanding an apology from the record store clerk, but wasn't getting one to his satisfaction.  So this guy started beating up the clerk and punched the clerk in the face several times, while still insisting on an apology.  The mall security guards broke up the fight and called the cops.

This guy ended up spending a month or so in jail, where the court required him to apologize to the clerk and pay for the clerk's medical bills.  In the end, this guy ended up filing for chapter 7 bankruptcy and didn't pay a cent to the clerk.  He previously had tons of credit card debt and had very few viable assets other than a large record collection and tons of porn videotapes.  (He probably thought a credit card was like "free money", where he spent it on all kinds of stuff like concert tickets, records, horror and porn videos, escort services, sex phone calls, trashy women, booze, etc ...).

Good grief! What happened when he bought "The Black Album," a shooting spree?
Yeah, but who gives a fuck? You? Jibba?

Well congrats. No one else gives a shit, so your arguments are a waste of breath.

Good question.

I have no idea.  I have not seen this acquaintance since the late 1980's.

I suspect this guy eventually cleaned up his act.

This guy already had a kid before he went to jail.  When he got out of jail, he was excited to see his kid.  The last time I chatted with this guy back in the late 1980's, he was talking a lot about his kid.  (He had lost custody during his short incarceration.  His ex-gf had custody).

Black Album is shit. Ride the Lightning, man. Ride the Lightning.

Typically, if you feel like you have to ask that question, chances are that you are... ;)

You have a point, but this is more of a customer review problem. In your position, I would have simply posted a critical review without the attitude.

Also, your experiences point out why I don't by ebooks on platforms like the Kindle. Plain PDFs are much better for handling links and graphics AND with I personally don't like having a device that someone else has access to, with the capability of disabling or changing features or even deleting purchases...

After the last Red Box Vancouver game we ended up discussing Metallica; I was pleasantly surprised when one of the guys successfully pegged me as someone that prefers Ride to Master.
