This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

We had a great game last night...

Usually I run a game for my friends' kids (ages 8 to 11) on Saturday morning/afternoon but I stopped by last night for a visit and the kids wanted to play.
But I wasn't prepared, I hadn't brought my dice...
So we made up a system on the spot that involved tossing a number of toy figures (I don't know the brand name) and counting those landing face up as successes. You got a number of figures based on your (BRP) skill level, 1 for every 10 percent.
We also decided that in a battle/contest against another character you had to reach a set number of successes over the enemies (kind of like Tennis)... in real time... meaning lots of frantic dice rolling as you try to reach your number first.
There was only one real battle, the Necromancer trying to wrench control of a servitor spirit that had possessed his partner (brother's) arm, but it was a great one!
Plastic figures went flying (we had over 100 to pull from)... people not in the fight scrambling to retrieve stray rolls from under the table. It was this crazy tug of war that went back and forth and was really close right up until the Necromancer rolled a blackout that gave him the win. Yay!

Next time we play I'll take my dice but I'm thinking the guys might prefer this other crazy thing we dreamed up.

The other big moment of fun was that the PCs were supposed to be doing recon on the moathouse from TOEE. Everything went well until they got into a LOUD argument right in front of the main gate, over who was the most powerful.
Their hirelings/accomplices panicked and ran... guards inside were alerted... and everyone had to withdraw... followed by a hilarious discussion of the importance of cooperation and having a plan before wandering in to dangerous places.

The main problem with government is the difficulty of pressing charges against its directors.

Given a choice of two out of three M&Ms, the human brain subconsciously tries to justify the two M&Ms chosen as being superior to the M&M not chosen.

I seem to recall playing this in college, although alcohol was involved.
D&D is becoming Self-Referential.  It is no longer Setting Referential, where it takes references outside of itself. It is becoming like Ouroboros in its self-gleaning for tropes, no longer attached, let alone needing outside context.

Once we started into it it reminded me of a game of Spoons... though with less bloodshed than our Spoons games usually produce.

Form the group wisely, make sure you share goals and means.
Set norms of table etiquette early on.
Encourage attentive participation and speed of play so the game will stay vibrant!
Allow that the group, milieu and system will from an organic symbiosis.
Most importantly, have fun exploring the possibilities!

Running: AD&D 2nd. ed.

Wow, sounds like gaming at its finest. This is the polar opposite of any gaming is still gaming, even bad gaming.

Whereas what you have here is the very best gaming you can expect.
