This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I can't remember what people's stance around here, if any, on the red box hack was, but now one of my friends just mailed me a link to a new old school hack of the red box hack. Hack-hack-hack.

I'm neither this nor that when it comes to OSR or D&D, but from a quick glance it looks nicely done, kinda nifty and at a page count of 26 it's easy to get the general drift of it... and you can apparently play a goblin.
Running: Call of Cthulhu
Playing: Mainly boardgames

I'm not sure where the OSR element comes from you are talking about, Old School Hack definitely isn't Old School in my book, it is a very "modern" game.

Though some of the concepts are neat it looks a lot like "4E" with its limited special abilities, crossed with some Indie game ideas like the mechanics of Apocalypse World.

Isn't this whole thing like a Storygame that is meant to specifically mock and insult old-school gamers?

Honestly, I don't know. I think its supposed to be what they see OSR as being, without all the in between stuff they don't like. But as usual missing some of the point of OSR stuff. (Being compatible with other OSR games and their original progenitors.)

Don't get me wrong though, I think it looks like a neat idea (quick, playable, RPG introduction) it lacks some things that to me would make it impressive.

Not at all.  The opposite in fact.

It looks like a fun game and I would give it a try.

So At-Will, Encounter and Daily "Sex Moves"?
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

Yes, Sean Connery\'s thumb does indeed do megadamage. - Spinachcat

Isuldur is a badass because he stopped Sauron with a broken sword, but Iluvatar is the badass because he stopped Sauron with a hobbit. -Malleus Arianorum

"Tangency Edition" D&D would have no classes or races, but 17 genders to choose from. -TristramEvans

Not so base. More "here are the couple of specials each class get, that's it.."

Simple health system, its down loadable for free so you might look at it.
