This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

4e isn't even a game?

Wait wait wait. 4e isn't even a game, in your eyes?

I don't like 4e, but it is a game. Saying otherwise is just silly.

...Okay then, but what KIND of game is it?

Is it a boardgame with pretensions of being an RPG?

Is it miniatureses game with roleplaying rules tacked on to it as an afterthought?

Only in jest sir!

However there was an editorial in Dragon back in the second edition days about how roleplaying "games" were not technically games at all, but amusements.  Which is in many ways a fair assessment as they are not a competive activity and that's part of some dictionary definitions or something.

Now if I were attacking it from the angle that D&D 4e isn't even a game I'd start with the minion rules and ways in which the rules aren't applied equally to NPCs and PCs but no.  While an rpg may not actually be a game in some obscure entmological way that argument isn't much fun for an uneducated laborer like myself.

Bear in mind that while I think 4e is a catastrophe for the D&D brand it's actually a better game than 3e or 2e neither of which seems to have been designed people who actually understood D&D very well or just had no respect for the original design.

While the earlier versions of D&D suffered from being cobbled together with spit and bailing wire, the later ones are over engineered, largely reactions against the storytelling game thrust of the nineties, and reward a style of play that I find appalling.

Somehow you should be dressed in Steampunk or Edwardian style clothing when you say that.

Do I look like some Dickensian waif waiting to snatch your wallet?

Steam Society sir, Steam Society or Steam Science if you must be vulgar!

Steam Punk indeed, I've a mind to give you a taste of my riding crop!

More silliness is warranted here, gentlemen. Come on now, let's get on with it. :D

It looks like Benoist is begging for a taste of the riding crop.

Even so sir, silly arguments require silly counter arguments.  Pick up your own end or accept my position!

Is this some obscure variant of The Chewbacca Defense?

Because Batman is not silly and D&D 4e simply is not a game.

For example, you cannot chase Dungeons & Dragons Fourth Edition through the woods with your hounds and hunting horns, what with it being an endanger species and all that rot.
