This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Character Prepping for an adventure - what do you take? What is your choice of Gear?

Well, Just what you can carry, ha?

Mkkay... um...
A Heckler and Koch XM8 Automatic Rifle with 1,000 rounds of 5.56 ammo, the one with the M320 Grenade Launcher with 25 mixed grenades. This includes a 4x sight, integrated folding bipod, 100 round magazines, an IR laser/Designator and a night vision sight.

Six standard fragmentation grenades, six mixed smoke grenades, six flash-bangs, and six cs/teargas grenades.

I'd go with a Jimmy Lile Next Generation First Blood survival knife, with a USMC K-a-Bar (Short for kill a bear) backup.

The usual survival equipment including waterproof matches, 7x35mm Binoculars, flint & steel, a whetstone, at least two flasks of flammable oil, fishhooks, 300 ft of 24 lb. test line, and shorter lengths of 50 lb and 100 lb test line. A Noah Water Systems Trekker portable water purifier, a Black Diamond  Mountain Climbing Gear package, 2x 70M of Dry Rope, A Black Diamond Quicksilver Quickdraw Set, A Body Glove Professional Snorkel Set,
and some hikers mosquito netting would round out the gear pick.
Blackmoor grew from a single Castle to include, first, several adjacent Castles (with the forces of Evil lying just off the edge of the world to an entire Northern Province of the Castle and Crusade Society's Great Kingdom.

GameDaddy.... Nice.

All of that sounds like it could fit into either a backpack or an over the-shoulder bag  of some kind.

The whole idea is that your player character involved in this KNOWS that he or she is about to get into a risky adventure of some kind - and for whatever reason he or she has volunteered to do this or they have to out of necessity for some reason.

The equipment or gear is what you grab for such an event when you got less than 24 hours to prepare and very limited or no knowledge of whats ahead of you.

Quote from: Koltar;378837Here's the situation:

Its a modern or contemporary setting, lets say sometime between 1995 to the present.

You or rather your character can only take with him or her what you could reasonably carry on yourself while walking or running. However, that does include an average-sized backpack and maybe an over-the-shoulder duffle bag.

What do you take?

What do you arm yourself with ?

What kind of footwear?

Clothing (or 'armor')?

What kind of communications Gear?
(assume a team with at least 2 to 3 others as allies)

IF it makes a difference, does the choice of gear change if the situation is:

1) Time traveling to a known destination.

2) Time traveling to a random decade or century.

3) Heading to a Zombie-infested city or town

4) Rescuing friends without permission of the authorities. "Off the Books" (Modern-day, with contemporary/modern-day politics)

5) Invited to be a passenger or crewmember on an alien spacecraft that has visited Earth

6) Part of a Group of modern-day humans who have decided to STEAL an alien spacecraft that landed here by mistake.

7) You are part of a new group of allies or friends that hunt Vampires or other monsters.

First thing on my list is a shovel. If it’s modern era then you can get one of those sweet Swiss Army style folding axe-saw-combo shovels.

If I can I would like to get my hands on at least a concealable bulletproof vest. In the modern era or unknown temporal destination a decent semi auto pistol (not a gun guy, so I would most likely just choose the 1911, I know there might me a weight issue) would be fine. If time traveling to a known era, I would try to carry something that took really common ammo for the time and place so that I wouldn’t have to carry as much with me.
I would also try to get a hold of one of those survival knives that have the built in compass and the hollow handle that is full of things like matches.
For clothes I would go for jeans, a light jacket, and a change of “respectable” clothes for whatever era I knew I was visiting. If a random era, then a just a white shirt and black suit (with matching hat, just in case.)
Comm gear would be, if possible, those encrypted channel military radios. If not, then those all weather Motorola walkie-talkies and plenty of batteries for either.

This should leave room in the load out for any of the special scenarios you mentioned.
EDIT: Just remembered: rope. Something light but strong.

I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned the idea of a "go-Bag". Its a concept or idea thats been talked about in the press or Media a bit more than usual the past two years.

Almost, except for the 'effin water purifier which is a suitcase sized contraption. While it can run temporarily on any 12 VDC charge, It also really needs the equivalent of a car battery to purify @ 3.8 Gallons per minute. So a Car-sized rechargable battery and some kind of charger, wind or solar based would be needed for an extended expedition.

OH, and I almost forgot, a fifth of Jack Daniels (For trade), and a fifth of Appleton Estates Rum (for consumption). Good liquor is worth its weight in gold in any time frame.

Could such an opening as the OP work as the starting point of a convention game scenario?
