I assume some of you may have heard a little about that oil spill in the gulf, right?

Likewise I assume that most of you are at least a little familiar with the cthulhu mythos.

So, can anyone image combining the two?

Just for starts, I could almost see some deep ones appearing on BPs oilspill cam to do something to seal the well themselves if it threatened a deep one city, but what would the after effects be?

Deep ones attacking all deep ocean drilling rigs? Demanding payments for damages? Launching a punitive attack of some sort?

Some possibilities here, think on it a while...

I'll give this a short while.

Maybe:

Deepwater Horizon accidentally drilled into an old one's brain, pinning it to its tomb as its horrid, unnatural blood gushes to the surface. Government scientists want to study the bizarre discovery (while keeping it secret) and debate whether to seal it or just try to contain it for study. Meanwhile, disappointed beach goers report that goopy, vaguely humanoid figures appear to be sporadically emerging from "tar balls" and shambling into the shadows. Cthulhu launches a class action law suit, only to be confronted with the true cosmic horror of corporate liability caps!

Not so sure about the Cthulhu angle (necessarily) but I can for sure see a giant Slimy Oil Monster (tm) rising from the depths to battle Godzilla in Tokyo. Maybe he's full of fishing nets and wrecked shrimp boats, just for texture.

Well, that's essentially Cthulu-ish anyway I guess.

Just the prospect of an oil spill disturbing Dagon and his fellow Deep Ones is enough to give me shivers. Or maybe the Deep Ones attacked the rig itself? The oil spill is going on, with natural disaster, miscommunications, obfuscation on the oil company's part as to what really happen, and yet, nobody can really explain what happened? Several rig workers saved from the scene of the disaster have gone insane, some swearing they saw blood spraying from the depth and life ripping the platform apart... the media talks about mass panic and delusions... maybe the PCs will be able to find the survivors, interview them, find a way to go through the red tape around the rig, and find out what really happen? Even solve it, who knows?

One can only guess at what might go on at remote oil rigs on moonless nights...communion with nameless things, visitors from the deep...and perhaps an invocation might go horribly wrong...

Speaking of oil platforms and rpg settings, ever hear of the troll platform? The damn thing is amazing. it's the size of the empire state building, was built in a fjord, lowered, had a platform slid on top of it, raised and towed out to sea then anchored on the sea bed.

A structure the size of the empire state building. Being raised, lowed and towed out to sea.

Someone needs to do this for a RPG...

Yes, I think it more likely that the spill was CAUSED by Deep Ones than that they are somehow victimized by it; more "likely" in the sense that this would be more in the style of Call of Cthulhu.

Meh, logically the deep ones are living beings that must depend somewhat on the ocean eco system. It's hard to see them taking such a huge dump in their own nest just to mess with the surface monkeys...

Now if sabotage prevented the well from being drilled in the first place, what would work.

This does spin the prospect of nuking the sea floor to stop the spill in whole new direction...
