This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[INFINITE WORLDS] Looking for good, constructive suggestions...

IF he said something useful - could someone please quotebox him?

Kind of strange to add a comment or make a suggestion in a thread where the OP that is asking for help - won't be able to see the comment.

Quote from: Koltar;381988Do any of you guys have good ideas or suggestions for this kind of alternate timeline-hopping game?

The first you need to decide is what Infinity Corporation is doing out among the timelines.

Let say there are three things going on
  • Gathering Resources and Goods and sending them back to Homeline
  • Supporting historical research among the echoes
  • Exploration and survey of new timelines to do #1 and #2
  • Stargate Style Alpha Sites in case of trouble back on Homeline.
  • Colonies

Do some research on Search and Rescue; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_and_rescue

Make a table of typical missions that SAR Teams do.
Using the the above list of why Infinity is out there to make a table of locales that could be involved. Then make   a table of groups and person that need recuse.

Roll some up and use it as idea seeds. Sprinkling things like Reich-5 and Centrum in.

Here you go, you can decide if it's useful.
Quote from: Cylonophile;382771As to a gurps IW idea, how about copping that movie "Daybreakers"? On a parallel world  where vampires became overpopulous and depleted the human population transdimensional travel is discovered, resulting in an invasion of vampires across the timelines.

Phantom Black did have a point though, the ad copy from the SJ site sounded like a gonzo pulp wankfest, it's only after you read the Wiki and the article by Hite that you realize there's some good stuff there.
Anyway, back on topic...

What tone do you want to take?  If you want to go dark, the Hellworlds and the mystery of the prion disease could lead to a IW-spanning conspiracy of some kind within the Infinity Corporation.  After a dozen sessions, have the threads start unraveling revealing the Mythos beneath.   Infinite Worlds meets Delta Green.

Okay...my tone so far for this mini-campaign is along the two-thirds somewhat realistic/almost believable with onje-third gonzo/over-the-top mixed in - when they're not quite expecting it.

IF any of you have the INFINITE WORLDS hardback this is my pseudo plan or map-out for this:

May 23rd, Sunday 1st SESSION: The player characters do the 'sleepout' exan exercise from page 10 of INFINITE WORLDS. In other weords they are at the training academy and are plopped down in an Ice Age environment and expected to make it back to training area alive. (Think typical harsh survival training that most militaries do) If they are really successful - they get a one week "Spring Break" on the Johnson's Rome timeline before their training resumes.

2nd SESSION: They are possibly given their first assignment as a Search & Rescue team and are assigned their Conveyor. Maybe either a medieval timeline or a mid 1920s timeline for that one.

3rd SESSION: Thinking a trip to either Gallatin or Gernsback,...with maybe some buracratic Homeline politics tossed in back at their base.

4th SESSION: While on whats supposed to be a standard injury retrieval - things heat up with LOTS of Centrum agents and maybe a hint of a Reich-5 worldline jumper.

All of the above is rather loose in intention - a lot of it will change depending on how they wind up playing and what they express an interest in - when they don't realize they expressing their interests.

Sounds like a good plan Ed, should be a lot of fun.  I really like this

I've run into a fair number of GMs that never deviate from the plan they have laid out, no matter what.  Please give updates as things progress.

Quote from: SionEwig;382712Well, since the group wants to be a SAR team then you should have them start out with some fairly easy search and rescue missions.

1)  A group of geologists studying the Grand Canyon on a Alt that never developed humans or any ..................., some really goos shit suggested....

2)  A group of sociologists/anthropologists studying on a inhabited world (let's go Stone age/Bronze age for the tech and culture levels) has sent an emergency signal........... Some more really good shi...er stuff suggested

3)  Then there is the more standard tourist rescue.  Perhaps the tourists were on a dinosaur safari and some big critter............ another pretty damn good idea!!
If you want to put some real pressure on the SAR Team, then have these rescues occur on right fter the other so there is little rest time between missions.

Hope this helps.

Actually that stuff DOES help.

I wasn't ignoring - just had a long day. One of the players gave me a ride home from work then we hashed out his concept for his character that he plays tomorrow. After he left - I wounbd up taking an unintentional nap...sitting in my office chair here.

Sionewig, I'm thinking of making a simple dice chart to use some of the variations or possible emergencies that you suggested here.

You got the right idea of the kind of stuff I was looking for.

Glad to be of help.  For some additional inspiration, look for the Time Scout series of books by Robert Asprin and Linda Evans (Time Scout, Wagers of Sin, Ripping Time, The House that Jack Built, and For King & Country).

You might want to score a second-hand copy of TORG -- or, at least, some of their INFINIVERSE newletters (my FLGS had a bunch) -- for non-standard GURPS timelines and adventure seeds.

I had a good impression of TORG almost 20 years ago - right now its almost impossible to find a copy of it locally.

LOVED the trilogy of paperback novels that set up the background of TORG.
Thats what made me want to play the game - just never got the chance.

TORG's really cool. I don't remember much of the game mechanics, apart from Cards you could use to interrupt events in the game, if I remember correctly, but the actual world was just a great mish-mash of different blends of genres. Awesome.
