LOL. I guess it comes with the territory, you know: "it's my game, my world, I make the rules around here", that kind of thing. It spawns a sort of unhealthy protectionism on the part of some GMs, particularly when they fall in the trap of the "GM vs. player" adversarial mentality. If something goes wrong, that's because the players suck, not because -God forbid- you actually might have screwed up. And if you screwed up, don't talk about it, because the players will smell blood and take advantage of it!

Two of the male PCs in a recent Star Wars series had a romantic rivalry with a female NPC. A third PC tried to go for the girl as well, after saving her life.

We had a lot of banter going on back and forth and it was an enhancement to the game. Everyone enjoyed the chit chat and the way the romantic developments played out. I dare say that I did Star Wars romance far better than Lucas did, not that it is hard to accomplish that feat.

One of the PCs married the NPC in the epilogue for the series.

That's it. I never understood the adversarial viewpoint. I never understood how the players could "take advantage" of anything. There's no advantage to take.

Getting a bit off topic here, but what the heck... I vaguely remember in my first years playing RPGs peeking at a scenario in a issue of Casus Belli because I knew a friend was going to run it in the near future. Sure I knew there was a trap behind this door and the bad guys used this type of magic or something... But I killed my own enjoyment of the game for the sake of "advantage" in the process. Teenagers gotta learn :)
