This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

If I were to modify the warforged, +2 con +2 str -2 dex is how I'd go for abilities, and I'd likely swap out the chance to negate a crit for 2 or 3 DR/-. Scouts are cool. For them I'd just go flat +2 con. And it'd be cool to have the other side of things with a powerful build version of warforged with +2 con +4str -2 dex and -2 cha and int.

Warforged are simply an abomination.

So tell me what you really think... What don't you like about them?

Cranewings

How about Golems with human attributes?

That depends on whether one finds robots abominable in a fantasy setting.  Personally, I do.

Of course, you can always re-skin them as something else so that munchkin players have a PC race available that's combat-centric, but still one-dimensional, tacky, and out of place in the setting.

An option, perhaps, is to recycle a weak and moribund concept but use a shitload of marketing dollars to cover the fact that you're using a terrible idea to substitute for another terrible idea.  So, instead of magic androids you can have, say, a sort of giant lizard race - something "born" of dragons - which fits the Dungeons & Dragons theme.

So even though they are described as being golems, you find that boring, so you imagine them instead as robots, which you don't like.

Well I guess:

Sacrificial Lamb

You know, I used to think I hated them, but now I rather like them. We have one in our D&D 3.5 group, and he's kind of interesting. For years, D&D has had sentient swords, so why not sentient golem-like creatures?

I agree with the criticism on ability scores. I also agree with the parallel with the Wizard's skills - "one of the most academic classes gets less skills points because they'd have high INT? It makes no sense". Damn fucking truth. This is bad game design IMO, the kind of afterthought/"metadesign" that sucks just as much as metagaming while playing does. (Another example of that sort of metadesign: "Oh, we'll put a +5 instead of +2 level adjustment to this monster as a character because we really don't want players to actually play these guys." HUH? How the fuck does that even make sense from a design point of view? Why not you know... NOT give the option to play them as characters in the first place?!)

The DR vs nonlethal damage makes perfect sense.

The non-grunt warforged idea is really cool. I'd allow that at my game table if a player wanted to play one. The examples (the walking piece of artillery Warlock FTW) are awesome.

Sometimes, the balance of the stats vs abilities vs other race templates just didn't make sense in this game. It always made sense to me to be liberal about it, and not get all up in arms because a +this or that would be added to it. What about Drows in 3rd ed? For their level adjustment, the template just doesn't make any sense to me. Never did.

I actually DMed Eberron and had to do a lot of changes regarding shapeshifters and warforged, one of those changes was removing the -2 wis.Still, the not Grunt warfgorged idea is really great.

DeadUematsu

Races of crafted soldiers and mammalian dragon men, given D&D's track record, are NOT out of place and are in fact better than shit like the nilbog.
