This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

ENWorld experiences financial trouble

Quote from: Settembrini;335078This reminds me of the attempts at damage control by the ENnies modclique a year ago. It´s like they go to the same training camp, the behaviour is so similiar.
Interesting, because the Pundit's blog post just showed up on his forum yesterday.

Quote from: Mistwell;335069Look, I was not guessing when I said that valuation, but I am not going to get into the details.  But putting that aside, I bet people undervalue THIS site as well.  In the hands of someone who knows what they are doing with M&A development and who knows how to change the site and talk to the right people, this site itself is worth a pretty penny I bet.  I'd guess around $50K, if done right.

Ell oh fucking ell – who even buys vBulletin fan sites? Really. Who would? Who does? Why? Either you're full of shit or you know some rich morons. You're in LA aren't you so I suppose both are possible.

Cached version of a WebsiteOutlook page from 2009 Sept 18 estimating the worth of enworld.org at US$34,353.

A Quantcast Audience Profile of ENworld.org. (Traffic is down by about 50% from six months ago, but it has been highly variable. It's actually up from one year ago.

I love the fact that on that link you can see that //www.slutload.com is the umber 1 visited site in the US.  :)

Quote from: Mistwell;335070Again, what "anyone".  Just you and me talking about this.  I answered your question, and you answered mine.  We're done with that discussion, because when asked you answered with being an asshole.

Anyone else wants to know, they are free to ask and I will probably answer.  Heck, they could Google me and probably figure it out.  I am not a private person.

What bullshit is that?

More speaking for others?  You know, just for convenience sake, why don't you list all the people on this board you personally speak for.  That would be real helpful.

And this is all just more insubstantial defensive posturing from Mistwell.
"Meh."

That's been pointed out. :) But i don't think it means the data is false, or that slutload.com is the most visited site in the US. The audience analysis sites use visits and demographics to describe the potential audiences of various sites in marketing terms. Sites like slutload.com don't have any actual content. They are just linked page after linked page, each one saying click here to see X, and each one loaded with ads. Like theRPGsite, they generate revenue by selling ad space. Unlike theRPGsite they have nothing but ads. They are incredibly easy to spot as fraudsters. Remove them from the ranked lists, and the relative ranks of the legitimate sites should be reasonably accurate. The data specific to each site should also be reasonably accurate.

People don't visit slutload.com. It pops up when they are visiting another site and then is very difficult to get rid of. Each pop up counts as a visit.

Quote from: Gordon Horne;335082Non-disclosure means you don't talk about it. At all. Not even to hint. If you have privileged information, under NDA or not, keep it to yourself. Don't dangle it in public.

Yes thanks for your legal advice.

No.  He just said he doesn't give a shit what other people think.  That's why he's furiously typing page after page of desperate self-justification.

He's like an old-edition elf.  "Each day the Mistwell must decide if its opinions will be superior because it's in with the mods OR if it's a distant and impartial commentator with no such knowledge".

Note also that pointing out his hamfisted claims to authority makes one a dick.

Disputing the orthodoxy of the majority tends to be a lot of work.
"Other RPGs tend to focus on other aspects of roleplaying, while D&D traditionally focuses on racially-based home invasion, murder and theft."--The Little Raven, RPGnet

I'm wondering if ENWorld hasn't become, actually, another overproduced, high cost third party product. Don't get me wrong, it's a great community and I certainly would miss it if it were gone. I just wonder whether traffic in a post-4e environment is going to be able to support the site in its current format. The base is split, the economy is weak, and the site seems to lack a mission. Site slowness continues while the new Wiki software continues to be buggy... currently, the site combines the functionality of a Yuku site with an abandoned Wikia. All it has, really, is the community base, and I get the sense it is weakening.

I've tossed a few dollars at it, but honestly I'm not sure if it will make it, especially if Morrus insists on it making him a little extra dough each month, considering the functionality. If it were my site, I would look at reducing costs in terms of both time and money, solve the slowness issue, and outsource any Wiki ideas until other aspects were stable. I'd keep the site friendly to casual visitors and try to double or triple the viewership over the next month.

ENWorld is basically a hangout and a swapsite for rumors, houserules, and general gaming advice. With 4e here and come, the scoops are not as interesting. The houserules are playing to two audiences, both smaller. The gaming advice is not a special feature of the site, you can get decent advice on more than half the sites on the net. It needs community energy. Unfortunately, I think the extended telethon may have the opposite effect, by signaling the site is more like a business with a price of admission.

Interesting year-update from Morrus.  Figured I would stick it in this old thread rather than making a whole new one.

Hey, not all of us in LA are rich, y'know.
On weird fantasy: "The Otus/Elmore rule: When adding something new to the campaign, try and imagine how Erol Otus would depict it. If you can, that\'s far enough...it\'s a good idea. If you can picture a Larry Elmore version...it\'s far too mundane and boring, excise immediately." - Kellri, K&K Alehouse

I have a campaign wiki! Check it out!

EnWorld hasn't had that problem for a while now.  It loads about as fast as this site now.

So far Morrus is claiming victory, so my concerns have been reduced to some extent. Still, things could be friendlier, especially with Morrus being a bit defensive about some of the site changes.
