This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So, I finished the game up last night.  It was a real blast!  The PCs got off a little light, bypassing the jungle.  There were two PC deaths, it rocked.

I love S3, and plan on running it again one of these days.  C&C is awesome, as usual...

Now, off to prepare for my Geist game.

I haven't used psionics in a long time, but I could've sworn some of the charts were also in the DMG.

Though personally, I think you're better off downloading a free copy of Mutant Future from Goblinoid Games and substituting in a Brain Lasher for the Mind Flayer.  That'll be a lot easier than actually trying to get the 1st edition psionics to work.  I dunno what to do about the Intellect Devourer.  I'd probably roll up a couple useful mental mutations and fake it.

I never used the psionics rules, I jsut rolled some dice and made effects that sounded right.  I basically made the psychic monsters make a SIEGE roll, and if they made it...something happened.

THere was a whole lot less psychic stuff in actual play than the module presented.

If the pcs are non-psionic, the only attack mode usable against them is psionic blast.  There's a chart in the AD&D 1e dmg with the effects.  It's based on the combined int + wis score of each pc affected.  Pcs should have decent enough scores to not get screwed too badly, but animal companions, mounts, etc will get hosed.  :-)

Philotomy Jurament

I can't say that I've ever actually used the D&D psionics rules, but boy, do I love the names of the attack and defense modes:

  • Psionic Blast
  • Mind Thrust
  • Ego Whip
  • Id Insinuation
  • Psychic Crush
  • Mind Blank
  • Thought Shield
  • Mental Barrier
  • Intellect Fortress
  • Tower of Iron Will

Okay, there are some boring ones in there (psionic blast and mental barrier, I'm looking at you), but who wouldn't want to listen to some Manowar while using Id Insinuation, Psychic Crush, and Ego Whip to dominate your enemies or turn them into gibbering idiots.  And invoking the Tower of Iron Will against a mind flayer sounds just all kinds of awesome.
The problem is not that power corrupts, but that the corruptible are irresistibly drawn to the pursuit of power. Tu ne cede malis, sed contra audentior ito.

It always seemed a shame that psionic blast was the only one that was useful agaist non-psionic types, so in our campaign we made up effects for the rest of the psionic attack powers vs. non psionic types.   And I agree with Philotomy about the cool names!!  I always had it in the back of my head to go back and make the defences useful outside of psionic combat too, but never got around to it.
