This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Dark Sun in 2010

Dark Sun when it was released was a thinly disguised attempt by TSR to show the results of not being "Green", i.e. wasting and destroying natural resources.

Whilst I disagreed with the premise, the quality of material of Dark Sun was good, certainly on par with Al Qadim. But I do question the relevance of DS in 2009 and for DND 4.0, but I suppose it needs all the help it can get.

I was always a fan of the first Dark Sun setting (screw revised...) so I'm excited for this one, and I am not a huge fan of 4E at all.

The one size mentality when the game was new perhaps?

I find the idea of using 4e mechanics with Dark Sun interesting and just might work. The real test is when then get to Dragonlance or better yet Greyhawk.

If they continue with rewrite the powers to fit the premise of the original then a 4e Greyhawk may be very interesting to see.

It is, but I kinda miss the original Dark Sun logo. That was a pretty cool logo, somehow.
He's like fire, and ice, and rage. He's like the night and the storm and the heart of the sun. He's ancient and forever. He burns at the centre of time and he can see the turn of the universe - The Family Of Blood.

I welcome the return of Dark Sun. It will be the first 4e setting that I purchase.

Because they thought it worked better for the Realms? Why do they have to treat every setting the same way? Or maybe they just listened to the fans who complained about that treatment for FR?

So if you consider it a mistake, and now they've learned from their mistake, you call them a cunt? Takes a big man to do that. Sorry, not man. Dick. I meant to say dick.

Also takes a big man to call someone a cunt where he's not going to read it, and while hiding behind the anonymity of a message board nickname. Sorry, I meant dick again. My bad.

Quote from: jrients;320642Back in the day I never grokked Dark Sun as a D&D saying.  I would consider playing a 4e Dark Sun game.  I'm not sure why I'm saying that, but it seems intuitively like a good match.

4e is more 'high powered' than earlier versions of D&D, and Dark Sun was a rather 'high powered' setting (in contrast to all other A/D&D settings).

So I guess the match makes sense.

I'm not a big fan of 4e but like others here I do think the setting might be a good fit for 4e.

That's true. IIRC characters started at 3rd level in Dark Sun.

They did. With psionic powers.

Bittersweet. I really have no interest in 4e but love Dark Sun. Hopefully there will be enough system neutral fluff in there to justify me buying it. It may be my first 4e book purchase!

Are you kidding? If anything, we're more fucked today than we were then in the Earth department.

That having been said, I highly doubt 4E Dark Sun will have any sort of message at all. It's just an RPG setting and will be considered as such.

You think so? I don't see that at all.
