This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

GUMSHOE heavily influenced the way I run any kind of investigative game now. I'm not a huge fan of the system, but the way they structure scenarios is pretty awesome.

I'm going to be picking one of these up sometime soon, I would guess, I just don't know which one.

I too own Trail of Cthulhu (but haven't had a chance to run it yet) and liked the little GMing advice therein on building modules. Could you recommend any of the published ones (e.g. Filmland) in that vein, that you found really illustrated well how the Gumshoe system is implemented to optimum effect?

I'm asking because reading play tests I've read constantly hit on the following problem, which I'd like people who have played (the OP included, of course!) to rectify, if possible: it's called the "revolving door problem".

QuoteIt wasn’t a bad system, but it feel a lot like spoonfeeding, or that we were in a scripted play rather than an investigation module - there is automatic success on clue finding, as long as a character has the requisite skill. Which meant that as all the investigation skills were spread out between the characters, it seemed to become a revolving door at times - we would keep trying until the right person entered the room.  Not that I wanted to play like that, but there seemed to be little point attempting any other way.

"Role-playing as a hobby always has been (and probably always will be) the demesne of the idle intellectual, as roleplaying requires several of the traits possesed by those with too much time and too much wasted potential."

A great RPG blog (not my own)

This is probably going to sound like a dumb question but is the only way to sample the GUMSHOE system by buying a scenerio?  Is there a rulebook that only has the system w/o a setting in it?
It is unbecoming for young men to utter maxims.

I also feel that this is the best thing you can get if you have experience with other systems, it's really useful.

Seanchai, Pundit: I definitely see your points. If you have other horror systems that do the trick for you, GUMSHOE won't be a priority. It's nifty, and it has cool ideas for setting adventures, but as I said before, nothing life - changing. I liked it, but I wouldn't say 'You must have it' to a long - time CoC fan, because BRP is good enough as it is.
My name is Ramón Nogueras. Running now Vampire: the Masquerade (Giovanni Chronicles IV for just 3 players), and itching to resume my Call of Cthulhu campaign (The Sense of the Sleight-of-Hand Man).
