This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

D&D?? Can A GURPS-lover GM a D&D campaign and enjoy it? (Advice? Suggestions?)

Well it doesn't sound like she would get frustrated by you being a beginning DnD GM so give it a shot.  If she played back in the 80's/90's then it will be somewhat familiar (just more complicated and rules heavy).  This ain't the forge so we won't look down upon you for converting to DnD....most of us anyway.

Maybe you should consider a neutral 3rd game you Both haven't played. Something that doesn't have game prep that seems more like tax time than play time. Savage Worlds.

You would then have this new game in common, instead of each having a separate expectation.

I second this idea.  Savage Worlds would be a great foundation to build up a strong gaming relationship.

You will hate it. It will drive you to hate her. You will kill her with a bat'leth screaming "Hab SoSlI' Quch!" Moments later you will kill yourself in shame, mumbling "nuqDaq 'oH puchpa''e'". The number of "honestly guys, hot gamer chicks dig me" posts on the internet will plummet almost instantaneously.

In other words, go for it! :D

Hey Koltar, IIRC you're a big science fiction setting roleplayer, have you ever done a fantasy game in GURPS?  I don't mean just the dungeon-crawling aesthetic is base D&D, but any kind of fantasy game at all?  If so, I think the transition to D&D should just be a matter of learning the rules.

Plus you have the benefit of playing with a few 3.5 newbies who probably won't get all rules-lawyersly on you.

Yes Pete -

I did a GURPS:BANESTORM game for a good  5 months or so every other week in the fall of 2006. It lasted around 9 to 10 sessions. Thats a "Fantasy" setting with Dragons and Basement parts of castles and such,...and swords, and knights, crossbows, halflings, nobles, kings,  and those types of things and cliches.

I'm going to see the person that I'm talking about this Sunday.

Today I bought the 2 preview books for 4th edition D&D  :  RACES & CLASSES and WORLDS & MONSTERS.
Should I feel like I'm betraying SJG and KRomm?

Toss out 3.5 and get yourself a copy of the Mentzer Red Box basic set. It has all you need to run a and play in a D&D noob campaign. You can always upgrade to 3.5 or 4e later without too much hassle.

Yeah I looked them over in the story and I didn't see any game value in them. And they are pit overpriced as a regular book.

Gimme a break - I get an employee discount at the store. Its not like I paid the MSRP for them.

Besides, even if I run a "BANESTORM" game for them I can stea...er, um borrow pictures from those two books to use as ilustration during the potential campaign.  After all a "dwarf" is a dwrarf, an "Elf" is still aelf - at least artwork-wise.

Besides, when people start talking about 4/e all the time in real world at the store I'll be informed as to the why and how of many of the changes.
