This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

RQ editions

Quote from: grubmanThat's kind of odd, becaue I've been "researching" the Mongoose edition lately and I've had the opposite expereience  .  There seem to be a lot of grognards who will mouth an opinion, but most aren't actively playing either version anyway.  It seems like a lot of new players really love MRQ, while the majority of old RQ players who are actually playing the game really like the MRQ edition?

There are certainly a lot of people who like to pop up (on forums) and make comparisons to older editions and some that say the new edition suck...but it seems like mostly grognard talk to me, while MRQ seems to be doing very well (as a product) and have amassed a good following of old and new players?

That's what I see anyway.

The new editions don't "suck", they are actually very playable with a few minor tweaks to the RAW.  All of my RQ2 and RQ3 players have switched without a problem and as I said before I think new players will probably have fewer complaints.  But I do think the criticism regarding the way the core books were split and how thin they were are valid but Mongoose seems to be coming around a little on that point by putting out longer books and combining the core rules.

Outside of the Mongoose fora, where I would expect it, I've not seen much love for MRQ to be honest.

The thing is, it's not really here or there.  Runequest did gritty really well, DnD did heroic really well, MRQ doesn't really do gritty anymore because that got changed but nor is it really heroic yet.  For me the problem with MRQ is just that there are far better games out there in what is a very competitive niche, trad fantasy.

I can't think of any reason to use MRQ where DnD or Savage Worlds wouldn't be a better fit.  I can think of reasons why I'd use Gurps or 2e or 3e Runequest but MRQ doesn't really fit that niche anymore.

It's not that it sucks, it's just that it's not that great, but everything has its fans and I doubt we could find any game so terrible nobody would enjoy it.

Well, I'll be getting it soon, and I'll form an opinion of my own...but to be honest, your comments make it sound better to me, rather than worse (which just goes to shoe, different strokes).  I mean, D&D and Savage Worlds are fine...but I'm trying to get away from "cinematic" right now...yet, I don't really care for "gritty".  I'm hoping for something modestly in-between so I can do more things with story and not be confined by mechanics or tone that cater to a certain style of play.  So right now, you've actually sold me that it might be just what I'm looking for.

Good, I hope you have a ton of fun with it.

You're not slipping back into ADD by the way are you?  I seem to have seen a lot of posts from you recently considering various systems, it's a slippery slope you know and as the creater of 101 days you are a role model to many of us :)

Anyway, if you run it let us know how it goes, tastes vary and if you have fun with it I at least would like to hear about it.

I'm systematically analizing every fantasy system (one at a time) becasue my group has decided to get away from 3.5 and has decided NOT to play 4E.  We've already seen too much information that says that this game isn't for us...in fact, it has made us realize that we have gone in a "bad" direction even with 3.5.

We are looking for a replacement as out go to fantasy game...adn I'm in charge of the work part.

I think my productivity with games since the 101 days thread has proven that I've kicked the habbit...doesn't mean I don't like a variety, and am just as interested in what's new as the next guy.

You should invest in a wood chipper.

Hey the HERO book will stop a bullet.  I've seen proof!  Not sure if I put that in the plus or minus category...
