This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I'm watching it right now and I had to say something to the producers: THERE ARE NO FRICKIN MOUNTAINS IN KANSAS, DUMBASS!

That ain't no shit.  I remember driving across Kansas on my way to Denver once.  I could see the road go to a vanishing point in front of me... and in my rear view mirror.  Long, straight and flat as hell.

Ah well the world of Smallville is so far detached from both our world and the standard DC universe that it really doesn't matter anymore.  Guess it exists on Earth 3.

Get over it. I've yet to see a single US TV show representation of the UK that's remotely accurate but I don't feel the need to bitch about it on a public forum. Except now I have. Bugger

First, you're welcome not to participate in the thread if you don't like the subject matter.

Second, this isn't a misrepresentation. A misrepresentation would be having a dam or caves in the show. Last night's episode had mountains and pine forests. Kansas isn't kind of flat and devoid of much beyond grass - it basically two dimensional. Showing Kansas with mountains and tree is liking depicting England as a peninulsa of continental Europe.

For what its worth, I was screaming the same thing when watching the "Odessa, Texas" scenes in Heroes.

Well Stargate had every other planet looking like Britsh Columbia so there.  But then compared to the original Star Trek's  southern California look it was a nice change for a while.

Thats mostly science fiction shows filmed in that area.

The SHOWTIME version of "Outer Limits"

"X-Files"

"Sliders" (the first 2 seasons at least)

"Highlander"...

"Stargate SG-1"

"Andromeda"

"Battlestar Galactica"...

Its so noticeable that these productions keep returning to certain locations over and over that some of us try to avoid the Planet Vancouver effect in roleplaying game settings like TRAVELLER.

US TV frequently depicts non-native wildlife running rampant across the UK - not just appearing in the background, but actually featuring in the plot.

Racoons seem to be a major culprit. We don't have them in the UK, so anyone saying "don't worry, it's probably just a racoon" in an allegedly British setting (which seem to happen more than you'd think) is clear evidence of an ignorant script writer.

But it doesn't bother me as such, I just keep a rough mental tally of the number of times this sort of thing occurs in the hope of it coming up in conversation. And now it has! Yay!

Sometimes I wish my visual memory isn't as good as it is.

On tonight's"Bionic Woman" there was a "Planet Vancouver" moment for me.

There was an apartment building featured in one secne that has outside spiral staircases and lots of windows. The same location was used in the movie WHITE NOISE and also I believe 1 or 2 episodes of the show "Highlander".

Now we just gotta see that one building or campus that was used for Caprica city center on nBSG and the Tollan ho,me planet on "Stargate SG-1"

Don't forget the Dead Zone.

I've been watching DaVinci's Inquest (takes place in Vancouver) and I'm amazed at how many actors I recognize on that show because they've been in X-files, Stargate, Dead Zone, Smallville, and tons of other shows that were filmed in Canada.

Ever feel like you could find your way around Vancouver without a map ?
Just go by all the familiar landmarks that have been used as locations for TV shows.
