This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Using Spike's Cultural Studies in your Game...

No one needs to be told how to adapt things to their own usage, it's basic human (and Pika!) nature to do so.  That doesn't mean I can't warm you up a bit to steal shamelessly from me. ;)

The first thing is to realize that I wrote them to be as generic as possible. I drifted quite a bit when I started speculating about a 'time of titans', but most of that is unimportant to the day to day campaigning of seasoned adventurers. If you don't want to have such an event, its actually quite unimportant, and thus disposable.  Likewise, a great deal can be changed cosmetically without ruining the articles themselves. If you decide orcs MUST be greenskinned warmongers, this doesn't impact unduly the article (which was written without green skin in mind, or much warmongering), though you could easily add any cultural changes you wanted to reflect your individual take.

For example: Green skinned Orcs might put a great deal of stock in the purity of their skin shade. The more even and more green your skin, the more attractive you are. Pale greens would be unattractive, while a deep, almost lime, shade would be the sign of strong, even pure, Orc blood, espeically important if the Race is strongly crossfertile with a wider variety of species.

Essentially, you are adding an Assumption and making any corrections. Assumptions are a mix of fact and speculation, and both are incredibly subject you your whims. They are the very heart of the deeper analysis that follows. Change the assumptions and then think of what that means to your version.  Some assumptions are relatively minor, others are incredibly central to the conceits I use for the following articles.

For Example: Lets say you remove the assumption that Gobliniods have a populations/resources problem. You decide that Goblins are walking garbage disposals that can eat anything and are just as capable of regulating their breeding habits to not overrun their environment as any other species. This is a huge difference from what I assumed about Gobliniods. This isn't a bad thing, nor is it impossible to work around. Of course, you would practically have to write your own article, but by simply addressing the assumptions you DO use, you could easily retell the tale in as much detail as you like. The Gobliniods you theorize would possibly have other reasons to adopt an agressive semi-anarchistic social structure, or even remove that aspect all together. Perhaps your goblins have entire subterranian cities and wage a war against surface races to prevent them from supporting the dwarves who have waged a genocidal campaign against Goblin-kind ever since discovering them in the Dark.
-End example.

Now, I hate short threads, I do indeed. Support this one by finding one or more articles and changing a few assumptions for yourself, and posting the results here.  You guys claim to love them, show me!:D
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

Orcs and Hobgoblins are the same thing. :)

Edit:  Yeah, I know, you were hoping for some more.  I'm working on it. Honest. :)

Great, now write up your own mini-article (or full length, spoil me) on how this actually works. :D

This one is sorta lame compared to the others, but I think I put forth a few good ideas in the OP
