This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The Chargen system for the new traveller will apparently include the possibility of death during chargen, like classic Traveller did.

I'm not sure yet if this is a good idea or crazy in this day and age, but I must admit I'm utterly surprised by this, I would never have thought mongoose would have done such a thing.

I see the hate for it as a bit over the top, but at the same time, I don't exactly see a reason to bring it back.

The burgeoning gorgnard in me cheers, but honestly, I'd say there's not really a place for it.  T20 capped it at injuries and some disabilities, I think, which is fine for me.

I think they should handle it the way people handled it in the old days.  A failed survival roll could mean either death or injury and a half-term.  The reason for the survival roll (as well as the reenlistment roll) was to prevent players from just going straight to the 56 year-old grizzled veteran with lots of skills.  Going another term in a high-risk career could mean that you'd actually lose the character you already had.

we rarely used the death result but i'm glad it's included anyway.

Well... if the chargen rules are any guide, the Mongoose approach is a nod in several directions at once. Sounds as if it works fine for chargen--we'll see what happens with the skill system and combat.

I used to play and run classic TRAVELLER as a teenager , my friends & I always assumed that the character you generated just after a previous one that died in character creation was somehow related.

I hereby postulate, that anybody who has problems with death at character generation, is a proto story-whore.

What if we don't mind it, but don't really see a need for it, either?
