This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: RoninHell I've been running a Star Frontiers campaign for almost a month now. Got the actual play log here and here.

OOPs!

 Sorry Ronin.
I don't normally read Actual Play reports , it always feels analogous to reading other people derscribe their sex lives - I'd rather be doing that kind of stuff with my "partners in fun".

Does sound like a fun game tho.

Quote from: beeberthe tech mix in star frontiers was always weird but still cool.  autopistols but also portable screens, FTL ships but no artificial grav.  we've had tons of fun with it, nevertheless.  your AP, ronin, is sparking a MAJOR jones to play it again :D
Glad I can help.:haw:  :D

Seriously though. It has started a cascade effect with my group. One of my players is the guy who introduced me to Start Frontiers in the late eighties. After playing in my campaign. Hes got the jones again to GM. So this thursday hes starting a Star Frontiers campaign. So I run one and get to play in one.

i remember trying to juggle SEU settings on the laser rifles all the time.  go big for damage and hope you hit?  or play it safe and keep the setting low, to get the more out of the pack?

dralasites were always my favorites.

Aos

I just wrapped up a short True20 SF game. The group liked it well enough, but in imo, I just don't have what it takes to run a long SF game. I much prefer Science Fiction Fantasy  and/or pulp.
You are posting in a troll thread.

My players have run into a similar thing with autopistols. 20 shot clip. Every burst uses 10 rounds. But a burst does 5d10 and gives +20% to hit. A single shot does 1D10 and no bonus to hit. So two big damage shots or 20 low damage shots. My roomate actually thought ahead. When they finally got to spend credits after the space station thing. He bought like ten clips.

is it 3 rounds to replace a powerpack, like the belt or backpack?  plug your rifle or pistol AND screen into a backpack, and watch the SEUs plummet

oh man gotta check out that online stuff, and convince my bud to run this again!

Quote from: McrowAlso, the new Metamorphosis Alpha didn't seem all that great to me. Just sort of came off as a big "Blah".
Actually I'm playing with the original.  It was just re-released as a PDF.
Using Mythic as the rules and MA as the concept.

The last sci-fi game I played in was a D20 Modern/Future game where we were all space marines. Things got a little crazy when another guy and myself figured out how powerful grenades were and started issuing them by the handful to everyone in the squad. The NPCs suddenly figured out how powerful grenades were that very same adventure, and several of us died. The next adventure we fought a vampire, then ended up on a planet full of dinosaurs. It just got wacky.

The last game I ran was Serenity. It was going OK, but the players had zero interest in the overall meta-plot (which was fine, we quickly shifted to the free trader style of campaign). The bad thing was I would swear quite a bit while running it (and normally I don't stoop to using blue words). The system was so confounding I quickly eBayed the book vowing never to go back to a MWP product ever again. I thought about running it with D20 future, but one of my players refuses to touch d20.

I do play a little shadowrun, but I'm not sure anything with elves in it would qualify as sci-fi to Koltar...  :D

I'd really love to play in or run another sci-fi game. Nothing too crazy with powers and an overabundance of aliens (like Star Wars with it's Force, or the magic that was present in Fading Suns). I need to find a decent system out there and run a Firefly-esque game soon.

Well I think Star Frontiers might fit the bill for you. (Its free too.) Or the kids around here seem to enjoy Traveller in its various incarnations. GURPS 3rd, or 4th could run a mighty fine space game too.

I plan on running something sci-fi soon.

Sci Fi superheroes to be exact:

This is using Mutants and Masterminds.

Here's my writeup so far:

Super Sentai Alien Ranger Force

The year is 2099.

Earth has by this time withstood 2 alien invasions- both carried out by the multiformed aliens known as the Gyr*. During the first war, earth formed it's single planetary coalition government. In the second war, earth was joined by a force of allied aliens from across the galaxy.
During the alien wars, earthlings managed to assimilate enough captured alien technology and innovation that they were able to throw off the invading forces.

Many sections of earth remain devastated (and abandoned) by the war- some of them overrun with malfunctioning relic cyborgs, war-bots and horrific alien mutant war beasts. However, the major population centers have bloomed into a utopian paradise of amazing technological advances.

A few alien Gyr holdouts also remain in hiding. A group of renegade alien mercenaries (from a variety of different alien races) remains stranded on earth. Also a few native earthlings (bolstered with alien and advanced technology) have refused to adapt to this "new" earth, and see this new world as a place of opportunity, where the strong and ambitious can take advantage of the weak.

Against this backdrop, the Alien Ranger Force was assembled by the super AI known as EN-Ceph.

Character Generation: Standard PL10 characters.

You do not have to be an alien. You can be a human with alien technology, or whatever else. It is important to note that all characters will wear a unique, yet similar uniform.

Choose a unique color or metal as part of your character's name. This color will distinguise your uniform from the other members of the team.

Reserve a mimimum of 10 points to develop a unique vehicle (land, air, or water) for your character. Vehicles count as equipment, not powers. See pg 144, M&M2ed. This comes out of your standard 150 point build. Make sure your vehicle has both life support! When all of the team's vehicles are assembled together it forms a starship which can be used by the players to explore space as well as hostile environments (underwater, warzones, volcanic caves, etc) on Earth.

Reserve a minimum of 3 points to donate to Alien Ranger Force HQ.

I may run this online, using either Fantasy Grounds or some free alternative.
Download Secret Santicore! (10MB). I painted the cover :)

I'm working on HardNova: Sovereign Space, which actually is very reminiscent in layout of the original Traveler from the 70s, but feel of Star Frontiers. It's even more streamlined than the HardNova 2 core PDF, but still a complete game, including 4 scenarios (same as the core). The game includes a printed 52-page manual, 2 dice, and pre-made character and starship sheets, so you can play right away. It's also compatible with all current HardNova 2 supplements. It should be available shortly.

Clash also wrote a new Miniseries for HardNova 2 that should be released in PDF format before the end of the year.

My two cents:

Check out White Wolf's Trinity- It's out of print, but very cheap, and though it's focus is mainly on psi types, there's lots of opportunities for adventure.

Alternity is also a great game that doesn't get enough love.

Star Frontiers is also good, very high on the Pulp-O-Meter.

D6 Star Wars also has that fast-action pulpy feel that I love.
