This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: grubmanAs long as you are upfront with the artist and don't try to hose him you can get some really cool stuff on a budget.

There's no doubt about that...but do you have any idea how low sales are for this stuff? First, I'm thinking of pricing each issue at about 1.50. I might sell 30....after a year. After RPGnow's cut, I make $1.05 per sale if it's priced at 1.50. You begin to see the dilemma. Old-school sales will have to increase, or we won't be seeing support much longer from anyone. Even bigger publishers are having low sales on this sort of thing.

I guess I was thinking along the lines of my own mindset, which is I gives a rats ass about profits.  My hobby is my hobby and my work is my work. :)  I don't mind dropping $50 of "fun money" to illustrate a project as I'll just spend that money on something else stupid, like a core rulebook for a game I'll never play and turn around and sell for ½ price.

By all means, if it is about balancing what you make with what you spend, then ignore what I said about purchasing art.

However, you can still consider asking for free stuff.  I get a lot of talented guys to illustrate various projects I've worked on just for the fun of it...all you have to do is ask.

I already take a 100% loss on labor. I try to buy as much art as I think I can cover with sales, just to break even. I can't pay 50-100 bucks out of my own pocket for each product I make (this is a freakishly low figure, to really do a good job with the art you would pay more), at a complete loss, because A) I don't have the money, and B) My wife would put a stop to it today ;)

the logical question then is, "Why bother?" Well, that's a discussion for another place and time, but there are definitely goals at work here.

I do this for free things, but I likely won't for a thing I charge for.

I'd be willing to host forums for LL, if you have any need for them.

Quote from: Goblinoid GamesWhen I refer to science fantasy, I specifically mean a world where science is dealt with in a fantasy way. So evolution, mutations, radiation, all of that sort of thing does not happen the way it would in realistic sci-fi. But there is no magic in my vision of science fantasy.

The forums for this game are slowly growing (very slowly :)), but many of the members are hard at work creating supplemental material.  My own setting and line of adventures are coming down the pipeline (I hope to have the setting book up at Lulu within the next couple weeks).  Someone beat me to the first cool release though (and hey, you can get it for free!):

But for a game that has hardly been out a month, to see a fan product already is pretty sweat IMHO.

First issue of a support mag (including a full adventure) from the publisher (and FYI this includes two pieces of my artwork...so In a way I guess I've entered into the pro RPG publishing ring ):

I hope to have my own setting/adventure book ready for Lulu in a couple weeks (fingers crossed). I'll post when it's done.
